Dust jacket rubbed and soiled with chipping and tears; color fading to spine panel; publisher's printed price remains at front flap's top right. Dark blue cloth; spine's paper title label toned; spine head frayed with slender loss to cloth at boards' top edges. Toning/foxing to text block edges' a few small stains and slight foxing to interior pages which, overall, remain clean. Binding is firm. A good+ copy in a good+ dust jacket.

Etat : VERY GOOD. First printing. A contemporary review called this "certainly one of his best novels. The story is narrated by Fred Spenlove, the chief engineer on the ship (a position McFee himself had held on several ships) - ironical, observant, philosophical, always disguising a romantic loyalty and generosity under a manner of intense reserve and skepticism. The theme is the love of Frank Fraley, a seaman, and Francine, a Norman peasant girl, Ôbound together by an invincible passion, destined to tear one anotherÕs hearts.Õ Tragedy is implicit from the first, because, as Spenlove, the narrator, says, ÔFrank was a man of the sea who was unfitted for life on the land. . . . He found Francine on the sea, and he should have lived with her on the sea'."
