Copyright page states "Copyright 1928, The Modern Library, Inc." , and presumably Garden City published under licence from The Modern Library. The Foreword and Biographical Sketch by the translator, Bernard Guilbert Guerney, recites that it was written in the "Autumn of 1927" but that it was then "Revised, Spring of 1930", presumably for the Garden City edition. Near Fine condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is intact, clean, lightly tanned, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind. The Binding is red full cloth with gilt title, etc., to the spine in blocks of black with gilt design, corners very slightly bumped. No Dust Jacket. See photos. 574 pages. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4". This superb historical novel (it is NOT a biography as some have stated) is the second volume of the author's Christ and Antichrist Trilogy (1895 - 1907), the first volume of which is Julian the Apostate: The Death of the Gods, and the final volume of which is Peter and Alexis. Published originally in Russian in 1900, the novel is written from the point of view of a student in da Vinci's workshop who tries to deal with what he sees as contradictions between pagan and Christian themes and values. The author's name is sometimes given as Dmitry Merezhkovsky. NOTE: This is a heavy book, weighing 900 grams / 2 lb., and will require extra postage for international shipment.

New York: The Modern Library, 1929 - this is an early reprint from 1930. Here is a PRISTINE copy of a popular Modern Library title. Bound in red balloon cloth (spine #6). Very short-lived binding style, in use only for a short time in 1930. This gold-heavy design was planned before the 1929 crash, and was quickly deemed too expensive for Depression-era book publishing. The gold torchbearer was replaced with a blindstamped torchbearer, and in 1930, the gold tree was dropped. This is the short lived binding type 6 with the gold tree dropped but with the gold torchbearer on the front. The book is FINE. Solid binding, very bright gilt, bright matching red topstain. Contents are very clean with no owner's signature or other writing in text. GORGEOUS! APPEARS UNREAD AND UNOPENED. The dust jacket is NEAR FINE - slight chipping on top and spine and three small stains on front cover. Otherwise extremely clean and bright! This book and dust jacket was protected from the elements - near pristine! The back of the dust jacket lists mentions 169 titles matching a 1930 printing and a very early reprint. Now protected in an archival-quality dust jacket protector. A few light spots on fore edge, pages lightly toned, jacket edges rubbed with two closed tears along edges, jacket toned (especially spine). vi, 591, [6] pp. Translated from the Russian with an introduction by Bernard Guilbert Guerney. Merejkowski was part of the Silver Age of Russian Poetry, an influential figure in the Symbolist Movement, and a nine-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Having turned from his work in poetry to a new, spiritually charged interest in fiction, Merezhkovsky sought to develop his theory of the Third Testament, an apocalyptic vision of Christianity's fulfillment in twentieth century humanity. Peter and Alexis, the final work in the trilogy, is preceded by The Death of the Gods (1895) and Resurrection of the Gods (1900). Well received internationally, The Christ and Antichrist Trilogy was largely ignored by Russian critics at the time of its publication, but has since been recognized as his most original and vital literary work. ?'Antichrist is coming. He, the last of devils, has not yet come himself; but the world is teeming with his progeny. The children are preparing the way for their father. They twist everything to suit the designs of Antichrist. He will appear in his own due time, when everywhere all is prepared and the way smoothed. He is already at the door. Soon will he enter!'? In Peter and Alexis, Merezhkovsky moves his groundbreaking vision of spiritual progress and the historical development of humanity to the world of the Russian Empire. The novel portrays Peter the Great's conflict with his son, the Tsarevich Alexei, as the inevitable confrontation between Antichrist and Christ for the soul of humanity. Rejecting the historical view of Peter as a powerful and honorable leader, Merezhkovsky suggests that he was a tyrant whose desire for progress and control came at the cost of countless lives.
