Copyright page states "Copyright 1928, The Modern Library, Inc." , and presumably Garden City published under licence from The Modern Library. Near Fine condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is intact, clean, lightly tanned, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind. The Binding is red full cloth with gilt title, etc., to the spine in blocks of black with gilt design, corners very slightly bumped. No Dust Jacket. See photos. 574 pages. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4". This superb historical novel (it is NOT a biography as some have stated) is the second volume of the author's Christ and Antichrist Trilogy (1895 - 1907), the first volume of which is Julian the Apostate: The Death of the Gods, and the final volume of which is Peter and Alexis. Published originally in Russian in 1900, the novel is written from the point of view of a student in da Vinci's workshop who tries to deal with what he sees as contradictions between pagan and Christian themes and values. The author's name is sometimes given as Dmitry Merezhkovsky. NOTE: This is a heavy book, weighing 900 grams / 2 lb., and will require extra postage for international shipment.

Leonardo da Vinci"), by Bernard Guilbert Guerney, this is the second volume of the author's Christ and Anti-Christ trilogy, following The Death of the Gods: Julian the Apostate, and preceding Peter and Alexis. This excellent historical novel examines da Vinci from the perspective of Giovanni Beltraffio (aka Boltraffio), then a naive apprentice in da Vinci's workshop, who reflects on the seeming clash of Christianity with the newly revived interest in Greek and Roman art and history that is the Renaissance.
