Bound in heavy green cloth with gilt type face on the spine. This copy is smyth sewn. About the book >.>.> Pollination has been a quintessential part of popular natural history for as long as any of us, or our parents or our grandparents, can remember, and the sight of insects busy-ing from flower to flower holds a quite unabated fascination today. Awareness of the need for pollination of the date palm stretches back into classical antiquity, but general recognition of the significance of pollination, and the importance of flower-visiting insects, had to wait for the scientific reawakening which gathered pace from the closing decades of the seventeenth century onwards. As time went on, other agents of pollina-tion wind, water, birds and bats were found to play a part. One of the main reasons for the enduring appeal of the flower-insect relationship must be that it is so funda-mentally one in which both partners benefit. In our present go-getting age we can sometimes be more conscious of how the partners exploit one-another's services (and indeed there are some examples of very one-sided exploitation between flowers and t.

Well illustrated, octavo, pp 418, very clean internally, green cloth with a very slight fade to the lower edge, otherwise very good, the dustwrapper has traces internally of a previous cover, (probably the Duraseal one), but externally it is very good, and now protected in a removable clear cover. [The methods by which pollen grains reach a stigma, enabling fertilization and seed production to take place, include some of the most varied and fascinating mechanisms in the whole world of living things. The role of insects in pollinating flowers is today a commonplace - so that it is easy to forget that its discovery is little older than the invention of the steam engine: before that, we imagined that the concern of bees with flowers was simply a matter of collecting honey. But the methods by which pollen grains reach a stigma, enabling fertilization and seed production to take place, include some of the most varied and fascinating mechanisms in the whole world of living things. This book, an important addition to the New Naturalist series and to scientific literature, is a clear and thorough account of all the ways in which pollination is effected - by wine, water, even bats; but principals, in many curious ways, by diversity of insect species. The authors were both distinguished botanists - Dr. Proctor at Exeter University, Dr. Yeo at Cambridge - with a wide knowledge of insects. Illustrated with 134 of their own drawings, with 19 photographs in colour and 180 in black and white, the book offers a unique introduction to a complex yet easily accessible subject of great fascination.].

The New Naturalist number 54. Index. Profusely illustrated. Please note that the jacket did at some point have a plastic protector fitted - which has been neatly removed (however has left a few marks/little residue). Jacket has faults - namely patchy edge/shelf wear, a little fading to/near spine, the odd small mark, odd small crease/rub to edges, a few very small (approx. 4mms) tears, little pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine, a little pushing/bumping to corners, marks/patchy browning/one tape repair to tear to reverse (white side), patchy creasing/rubbing/marks to front/back inner flaps and is in only good condition. Boards are very good with a little pushing/bumping to corners, a few marks, minor patchy fading, the odd small bump/rub to edges and a little wear (pushing/rubbing/bumping) to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Pages are a bit tanned. Small mark to lower corner of most pages. Odd small mark/spot of foxing to page edges, tops and bottoms. Occasional small marks to pages. No other faults. All books described honestly and accurately. Paypal accepted.
