Cloth. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. John Vernon Lord (illustrateur). First edition. Two excellent copies of the first edition of this illustrated retelling of Aesop's fables, with letters from the illustrator to the binder Eric Sweet. Two volumes of the same work. First of this illustrated retold edition of Aesop's Fables. With a postcard written to Eric Sweet by John Vernon Lord discussing Sweet's collection of fable books, on a card illustrated with Lord's 'The Giant Jam Sandwich', and four letters between Lord and Sweet requesting information on studies dedicated to Aesop's fables. Each volume is illustrated throughout with numerous in-text images and decorations. A collection of over two hundred the fables attributed to Aesop, a Greek fabulist and storyteller noted for his tales characterized by anthropomorphic animal characters. Many of the tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. Retold in verse by James Crain Michie, an English poet, translator and editor. Illustrated by John Vernon Lord, an English illustrator, author and teacher widely recognized for his illustrations of important texts and classics of English literature. With a chemise and slip case bound by Eric Sweet, a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking, reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original unclipped dust wrappers are also excellent. With cloth covered chemise and slip case bound by Eric Sweet, which are also in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound.
