He was the first to use the electric oesophagoscope (see "Ueber Gastroskopie und Oesophagoskopie" 1881), and the first to make a plastic reconstruction of the oesophagus after the resection of its cervical portion for carcinoma. His "Die Krankheiten des Mundes" was so authoritative that it took 11 years for a second edition to be needed. J-8.
