Ajouter au panierunbound. Etat : very good. 8vo. 4 pages, Perth, March 18th 1857, written at the very time when he totally abandoned the Pre-Raphaelite Movement in favor of a more commercial style that allowed for a greater output of canvases, in full: "I now feel that in spite of all previous alterations it must be considerably added to. 5-1/2" must be added on each side, right & left to enable me to get the horses head and tail properly. Also make the canvass deeper. If deeper - as much as what is trimmed over will allow. You will find enough canvass on the right and side, but of course where the horses head is you must sew on more canvass - as you did on the other side. Now I need not tell you that this must be done immediately, and returned sooner if possible than last time you had it. I have little or no time to paint the horses and finish the picture therefore I trust in you to aid me as quickly as you can by following the above directions speedily executed. Please send word by return of post that you have received this picture safely." Condition: Tiny hole through the center of the letter created when the recipient placed Mallais' order through an "accounts receivable" stand with protruding spike. Also, two minor glue stains at the top-center which affects only three letters in the address and salutation. Overall: very good condition. English painter and illustrator who was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement. Two years prior to this letter, Millais married his wife Effie - formerly married to the critic John Ruskin, who had supported Millais early work. By 1857, he began to paint in a broader style, which was considered by Ruskin "a catastrophe". Modern critics have concluded that this radical change in style resulted from Millais need to increase his output to support his ever growing family.

Ajouter au panier8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To the Saxon artist Ludwig Gruner (1801-82), long active in Britain and then director of the Royal Cabinet of Engravings in Dresden: "Dear Sir. I am delighted to hear so good an opinion of my Holbein. I bought it without a moment's hesitation upon its merits. If there has been any published criticism on the pictures during the Holbein exhibition I should very much like to have it, as I should like my judgement supported. I have read Mr. Robinson's letters in the Times, but of course I can form no opinion without seeing the two pictures (the Madonna's). Some day I hope to visit Dresden and see your picture. My wife desires me to send her best regards to you [.] I am staying now in Scotland but when the picture is in my house I will return you your acknowledgement of its being borrowed for the Dresden exhibition.".
