Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [somewhat worn copy, with rather severe fading to spine cloth, gilt lettering on both spine and front cover heavily rubbed, one-time owner's signature and date on front endpaper]. (B&W photographs) Classic Depression-era account of "wild boys (and girls) of the road" (to steal the title from the William Wellman-directed film about youthful hoboes that was released the previous year), illustrated with photograph taken by the author, a young sociologist who was then a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. In the early years of the Depression, he began hanging out with unemployed men in the city's mission district (presumably Minneapolis, although he doesn't actually say), and later living "in hobo railroad yard camps or jungles and river shanty-towns, [where] I found mor and more youths and not a few girls." As he got more and more involved, his plan "was to associate with as many homeless persons as possible under conditions of social equality, to experience their life, to record their stories, to ascertain in as scientific a manner as possible their opinions, ideas, and attitudes." At the conclusion of his research, which he conducted on weekend, holidays, and vacations, and more extensively during the summers of 1932 and 1933, he had compiled "a thick dossier full of notes and impressins, 500 life histories of boys and girls I had met on the bum, 1,000 samples of conversations, and over 2,500 opinions, ideas, and attitudes expressed by all classes of transients under all conditions." After beginning to organize all his gathered data in a systematic, scientific manner, however, he came to realize that "to describe their life in statistical terms was not only inadequate, it was untrue. Such a description omitted the most important phases of their lives, their strife against cold, their battle for bread, their struggle to obtain and repair clothing, their hates, their humors, and their loves. An artist -- not a scientist -- was needed to pain what I had seen, record what I had heard. And I was not even an amateur craftsman. Yet for the sake of the homeless thousands of boys and girls, I decided to try." This book was the result.
