The prepublication appearance of the author's story that would be released in book form by The Century Company in 1900. Per an editorial note, the present story is rewritten from a shorter one of the same name published by the author in The Atlantic Monthly, 1867, (which we have as well). The authors were each invited by the editors of Century to write a story about the topic of thirteen at a dinner table. The stories were published one at a time with no author citations, although Century later identified the authorship as being Wister, Deland, and Mitchell, respectively.
