(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5313) Second edition.   The San Sebastian Tournaments of 1911 and 1912 were remarkable for two reasons, of which are virtually forgotten today. Organized and run by Mieses, it was the first at which all competitors were reimbursed for their fares and living expenses; it thus constituted an enormous advance in the development of chess as a profession. Secondly, it was one of the few non-FIDE events for which a special qualification was demanded. Only those master were invited who had won at least two fourth prizes. But with the number of competitors coming to a smaller total than twelve it was decided to hold it as a double round event. Of the eleven who played, nine had also played in 1911. Only two players, Dr Perlis, who was to die tragically and prematurely in a mountaineering accident the very next year, and Forgacs were new comers. Forgacs in fact fell ill and withdrew after the first cycle had been completed. Spielmann started off in wonderful style and, by the end of the first half of the tournament, he was leading by a full two points. But he fell away badly in the second half while Rubinstein, who in direct contrast to Spielmann started miserably, yet managed to recover and pull up to the leaders and pass them just in time for the last round. Leading scores: Rubinstein 12; Nimzowitsch and Spielmann 12; Tarrasch 11 1/2; Perlis 10. Condition: Light edge wear, pages age toned, else  very good.
