Amory's section on the Henry Fielding sale had already been prepared with a view to separate publication when he was approached to edit this volume and his 17 page introduction includes a great deal of valuable information. In conseequence the introductions to the other sale catalogues in this volume have "in some degree [been] scaled up" from the norm for the series, making this an especially useful source for 18th century auction and library history. The General Editor of the series was A. N. L. Munby, the noted author and librarian who spent much of his career working in the booktrade. This particular volume was edited, with an introduction by H. A. Feisenberger. Loosely inserted into the volume is a publisher's pamphlet pertaining to the work.
