Both of these books were presented to Harlan Fiske Stone when he was an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. (He was chief justice from 1941 to 1946.) * Speeches is inscribed: "To Harlan F. Stone from his associate and friend Oliver Wendell Holmes. May 23, 1928." It is the final compilation of 19 speeches containing: "Memorial Day" (1884), "Harvard College in the War" (1885), "The Puritan" (1886), "The Profession of the Law" (1886), "On Receiving the Degree of Doctor of Laws" (1886), "The Use of Law Schools" (1886), "Sidney Bartlett" (1889), "Daniel S. Richardson" (1890), "The Use of Colleges" (1891), "William Allen" (1891), "The Soldier's Faith" (1895), "Learning and Science." (1895), "George Otis Shattuck" (1897), "Walbridge Abner Field" (1899), "At a Dinner Given by the Bar Association of Boston" (1900), "John Marshall" (1901), "Ipswich" (1902), "The Class of '61" (1911) and "Law and the Court" (1913). Mr. Justice Holmes first edition, inscribed: "For H.F.S., a meagre conveyance of your great friend, but it comes to you with the highest regards from F.F. Cambridge, 6 October 1938." Frankfurter became Stone's associate on the Court in 1939. Holmes retired in 1932.
