Ce anume mancam? Un studiu privind nutritia si nivelul activitatii fizice in randul australienilor a aratat ca, desi trei sferturi dintre acestia au declarat ca mananca legume, mai putin de 7% consuma doza zilnica recomandata, de cinci portii. Persoanele cu cea mai redusa predispozitie sa consume legume sunt adultii tineri (intre 19 si 30 de ani), iar cele avand cea mai mare predispozitie raman copiii intre 4 si 8 ani! Mananca toate legumele, Billie, si vei creste frumos si puternic!" Consumul de fructe sta ceva mai bine, cu mai mult de jumatate din populatie consumand cel putin doua portii de fructe in fiecare zi. Barbatii, insa, se afla cu mult in urma femeilor. Dar problema cea mai mare este ca ne luam aproape o treime din energia necesara din consumul de grasimi, ceea ce este considerat prea mult. In continuare, vom examina diferite alimente; dar retineti ca trebuie sa fie un echilibru in ceea ce mancam. Rareori se pune problema in termeni de totul sau nimic, ci este vorba mai degraba despre un consum prea mare din anumite alimente si prea mic din altele. De asemenea, este important sa cunoastem legaturile stabilite intre cancer si produsele alimentare si bauturi. Nu are niciun sens sa discutam daca ceaiul verde se asociaza cu o mica reducere a riscului de cancer, in timp ce ignoram un factor de risc major, cum este consumul de alcool!" The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether the impact of prayer could be measured in a formal study, based on the large number of anecdotal reports of efficacy. The study was a prospectively randomized double-blind trial that added prayer by an established Christian prayer group to conventional therapy for cancer. The unique design feature was that the primary endpoint was a change in a validated scale of spiritual well-being. The patients were informed that they were participating in a study about spiritual well-being and quality of life but remained blinded to the intervention. The initial observation from the baseline data was that spiritual well-being made a unique contribution to quality of life. The final outcome of the study was that there was a statistically significant difference in spiritual well-being favoring the prayer group. Thebackground includes a fascinating review of the medical literature on the topic, which contains positive and negative studies that each attracts a vigorous debate about methodology, endpoints, and whether metaphysical phenomena can or should be studied using scientific methodology. The complementary and alternative medicine literature is also equivocal as to whether prayer, arguably the most common complementary medical therapy, should be included in the range of interventions grouped under that heading.
