Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Limited First Edition. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Limited edition of 200, of which this is number 172. viii, 32 pp of text, followed by 96 plates, 16 of which are mounted on and protected by tissue, upon which the caption is written. Plates are all on recto sides, with versos left blank, and each is folio sized, or 15.5 by 11.5 inches. Fine heavy stock handmade paper used. The book itself is bound in vellum or parchment and comes with cloth folio folder-style box or chemise which is sealed with ribbon ties. Everything about this book bespeaks a prestige or deluxe production by The Studio, and the care put into the book production likewise reflects the high esteem with which Rowlandson was held in the early twentieth century. For those who know Rowlandson solely as a humorist caricaturist, this book would be a revelation, for here is displayed his extraordinary range, with examples of his landscapes, seascapes, more serious city scenes, classical allegories, etc. perhaps even overshadowing his farcical imagery. Also the essay in the front is a concise appreciation in the best sense, somehow swiftly giving us a sense of the man, his times, his influences, or giving us a meaningful context by which to more fully understand the works beyond the delight they invariably impart. This copy of the Oppe work is in fine condition. The interior is pristine. Some very light tarnish (by which I mean a slightly orange hue, not to be confused with foxing) might be found in spots on the vellum, but I daresay few will find this at all a concern. The box has had wear along the edges but this has been addressed and discreetly remedied so that while signs of wear have not entirely disappeared, the box is strong, stable and quite attractive. Rowlandson, Thomas (illustrateur).

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. A limited edition being one of two hundred copies of Oppe"s extensively illustrated study of Rowlandson, illustrated with ninety-six plates, retaining the publisher"s original cloth chemise. In the publisher's original paper vellum elephant folio, housed in the publisher"s original folding cloth portfolio case. A limited edition, being number forty-two of two hundred copies. Illustrated with ninety-six plates, including sixteen mounted colour plates with captioned tissue guards and eighty monochrome plates. Collated, complete. A substantial illustrated monograph examining Thomas Rowlandson"s work as a draughtsman, watercolourist and caricaturist. Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827) was a British draughtsman, watercolourist, printmaker and caricaturist, particularly celebrated for his lively and frequently satirical depictions of Georgian society and influential figures including Georgiana the Duchess of Devonshire, and Napoleon Bonaparte. The editor, Adolph Paul Oppe (1878-1957) was a British art historian, collector and museum official whose scholarship helped establish the serious study of British drawing. A generously produced survey, reflecting the remarkable breadth of Rowlandson"s artistic achievement. In the publisher's original paper vellum elephant folio. Externally, generally smart. Slight soiling to perimeters. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. One or two light marks to boards. Two small areas of damp staining to lower perimeter of front board. Folds splitting slightly, particularly at the lower corners; fragile but holding. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with one or two very light spots and handling marks. Very Good. Thomas Rowlandson (illustrateur). book.

First Edition. One of 200 Large-Paper Copies [ROWLANDSON, Thomas]. OPPÉ, A. P. Thomas Rowlandson. His Drawings and Water-Colours. Edited by Geoffrey Holme. London: Published by The Studio, 1923. First edition. Limited to 200 numbered large-paper copies (this being No. 110). Large folio (15 5/16 x 11 1/4 inches; 390 x 287 mm). viii, 32 pp. Illustrated with sixteen mounted color plates, each with descriptive tissue guards, and eighty black-and-white plates reproducing drawings and watercolours. Original parchment over bevelled boards, the front cover ruled in brown with a small decorative motif in brown and grey and lettered in gilt; spine with five flat raised bands, lettered in gilt at foot and with a black morocco gilt lettering-piece; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt, others uncut. A near-fine copy, clean and well preserved. A landmark monograph and one of the finest twentieth-century illustrated books devoted to Thomas Rowlandson, presenting his work at a scale and fidelity rarely equalled. A. P. Oppé, one of the foremost authorities on British watercolor and caricature, brings scholarly rigor and connoisseurship to Rowlandson's immense and varied output, emphasizing the artist's technical brilliance as a draughtsman alongside his satirical genius. Issued by The Studio in a deliberately small large-paper limitation, this edition was intended for collectors and institutions rather than the general market. The mounted color plates, printed on superior paper and carefully tipped-in, remain among the best reproductions of Rowlandson's watercolors ever published. As such, the book has long been regarded as a cornerstone of serious Rowlandson libraries and an essential reference for collectors of English caricature and Regency graphic art.
