Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This thought-provoking narrative sheds light on the destructive power of marital oppression and the urgent need for legal protection for married women. The author, a victim of her husband's cruel imprisonment, recounts her harrowing experiences and exposes the shocking lack of rights afforded to wives in the 19th century. As she fights for her sanity and freedom, her story indicts a society that condones domestic abuse and denies women their basic human rights. This book not only provides a glimpse into a forgotten chapter of history but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality. Its insights illuminate the devastating consequences of legal inequality and the importance of empowering women to live lives free from violence and oppression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a groundbreaking text that delves into the complex interrelationships between insanity, morality, oppression, and freedom in the 19th century. The author, an asylum patient, courageously exposes the true nature of insanity as a condition that can strike any individual regardless of their station, particularly those perceived as a threat to the established social order or who suffer from substance abuse disorders. This book traces the historical roots of the asylum system, arguing that it was conceived by religious zealots who used dubious moral codes as a means to control dissenting voices, particularly women. The author suggests that the abuse and neglect rampant in the system stem from the Calvinist belief that those deemed insane are not deserving of God's grace, and are thus unworthy of compassion or protection from society. The work highlights the urgent need for reform, arguing for a system that prioritizes treatment over punishment, and for the preservation of individual liberty. Through its unflinching critique of the asylum system, the book provides a unique perspective on the complexities of the human condition and the importance of dignity and justice for all. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the deeply personal and societal consequences of denying women their basic rights. Through the author's own harrowing experience of wrongful imprisonment in a 19th-century insane asylum, it exposes the injustices faced by married women who dared to express independent thoughts and beliefs. The author's poignant narrative sheds light on the prevailing social fabric of the time, where the suppression of individual rights, particularly those of women, was not only tolerated but also legally sanctioned. This historical context serves as a backdrop for the author's exploration of themes such as freedom of conscience, religious intolerance, and the arbitrary nature of power. By challenging the notion of insanity as a crime rather than a misfortune, the author raises profound questions about the treatment of those deemed different or inconvenient. This book serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of individual liberty and the devastating effects of its denial. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Former owner's name on title page (after new endpapers) -- "Catharine ?? from Cousin Joe". Scattered foxing. Sixteen page publisher's catalogue at rear. Caroline Howard Gilman (pen name, Mrs. Clarissa Packard; 1794â"1888) was a nineteenth century American author. Her writing career spanned 70 years and include poems, novels, and essays. Cindy A. Stiles asserts that Gilman is best understood as a âgentle reformerâ and âearly feministâ rather than a âsentimental moralistâ (Stiles, The History of Southern Womenâs Literature, 69). In 1819, Caroline and her husband Samuel Gilman moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where her husband served as a Unitarian pastor from 1819 to 1858.In 1832, she began to edit a juvenile weekly paper, named The Rosebud, later called The Southern Rose. Gilman/Packard contributed most of the verses, tales, and novels, which were published in the periodical. For many years she also authored the Ladyâs Annual Register and Almanac. Based on the author's observation and experience, the book provides insight into domestic life and manners in the early 19th century America in novelistic form. Several passages written in Negro dialect. These and her other works passed through many editions and were admired for âtheir practical lessons as well as their genial simplicity and humor.â For example: "No other state of society can show a scene like that which was presented at Belleview on the third Sabbath after the birth of our son. All the negroes, dressed in their best, came to welcome their 'young maussa,' bringing offerings of eggs and chickens, and pronouncing prayers and blessings . " There is a four-page "Note" at the rear titled: "Religious Privileges of the Negroes of Charleston, D. C. ".…
