Painter and art historian (1918-91). The two items are both very good, attached to one another by a staple in a corner. The copy of Samson's letter (one page quarto, very good, on yellow paper) explains that the Society is 'endeavouring to arrange a course of three Cantor Lectures next Spring on modern philosophies - art, architecture and music', and invites him to deliver the first of these. Gives details of the fee, dates, etc. Gowing's letter: one page, octavo. 'I am honoured by your invitation to give the first of the Cantor Lectures next year. But I must refuse it - I'm very sorry. I am a bad lecturer and confine my efforts to my own students.' Signed 'Lawrence Gowing'.…

First Edition. Title continues :" Tire du Cabinet de Monsieur le Chevalier de de la Roque." This is the original early 18th century engraving, hand coloured and in an old walnut frame. Print is in very good condition with no discernable damage to picture area. There are some light spots in title text at the bottom. The lady in the centre of the picture is about to go hunting and is saying her goodbyes ( les adieux ) to her little boy being held up by her nanny. The horses are finely engraved. There is a black servant, antoher servant with a falcon, and another with a gun. The original painting, by the famous Golden Age Dutch painter Wouwermans, was owned by the famous art patron Chevalier de la Roque. The engraver Laurent was born Andrew Lawrence in London in 1708, the son of the apothecary to Queen Anne. After losing his fortune he went to Paris where he built a reputation as a fine engraver. He died there in 1747 and was buried in a heretic's grave. Paperback. No dj.…

ONE: Manuscript pedigree. On one side of a 49 x 38 cm piece of thick laid paper, with no watermark. Folded three times. Discoloured and with light damp staining. The greater part of the pedigree is written in ink in a loose hand, and traces the descent of Sir Thomas Lawrence's mother Lucy (née Read) to William the Conqueror. The pedigree is continued in pencil at the foot of the document, with the eldest of the five children of Thomas and Lucy Lawrence named as 'Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A.' The pedigree continues through the youngest of the couple's five children, the artist's sister Lucy, who married John Meredith, their daughter Lucy marrying John Aston, and the couple having ten children.) TWO: Three nineteenth-century manuscript inventories, in different hands, the first two of collections of engravings, the last of books of engravings, the three lists collected together with a brass stud. The first page of the first list aged and lightly-stained, otherwise in fair condition. Clearly the property of a member of the Aston family, and the last list suggesting preparation for sale. Only the first list relates to Lawrence. First (4pp., 4to, bifolium), a two-part list, the first page headed 'The Lawrence Gallery Vol. I. Description engraver size', applying to the first two pages, which list 47 artworks; the third page, headed 'The Lawrence Gallery Vol. II', lists a further 47 artworks. The lists would appear to describe the contents of an actual album ("book") in two volumes, containing portraits of Lawrence and his contemporaries. The first four entries in the first volume are: '1 Frontispiece Vignette. Sir Thomas Lawrence. Line engr: | 2. Sir Thomas Lawrence. - Proof Line engravg. | 3. King George IV. Outline lithograph with autograph. | 4. The young King of Rome. Lithograph for picture painted in outline engr by Lewis at Vienna'. Dimensions are given to the entries for the second volume (e.g. '14 Madame Collier. Fine old mezzotint 17 ½ x 14 slightly spotted'), and in some cases in the first (e.g. '20 Prince Metternich, mezzotint engr. Couleur 15 x 12 fine state'). The final entry of all is '47. Original Sepia Drawing of Sir Thomas Lawrence Studio.', with 'given to C R A' added in pencil, the recipient being Lawrence's great-nephew Charles Reginald Aston. Second, list (3pp., 4to) of 42 items, headed 'Line engravings, after Sir Joshua Reynolds & others, mounted on cardboard & bound in 2 folio vols. 27 x 20 half morrocco [sic] cloth'. Third page headed 'Vol. II. | Reynolds &c. engravings'. Engravers' names and dimensions are stated, and entries are dated between 1777 and 1878. Third, list (2pp., 4to) of 'Books in Mahogany Box.' Fifteen unnumbered titles, the earliest-dated being 'Ruins of Palmyra. 1753. Architectural', and the latest 'Grindley's Scenery of India Folio. 1830 coloured prints'. 1p., folio. Good, on a lightly-aged piece of ruled paper. In two columns, with the left-hand column, written out by Roberts with his address at the foot, headed 'Name of Exhibition', and listing twelve international exhibitions between 1862 (Amsterdam) and 1898 (Brussels). The right-hand column, headed 'Picture Exhibition', carries Alma-Tadema's responses, some of which are written in darker ink than others, indicating that they were added at more than one point. Alongside 'Paris (EU) 1867' he writes '13 pictures amongst them. the Education of the Children of Clovis, the two above An entrance to a Roman theatre, armuror's [sic] shop. Agrippina visiting the ashes of Germanius, Egyptian game'. For 'Vienna 1893' and 'Melbourne 1880' he writes 'don't remember'. The last entry, for 'Royal Scottish Academy: | ? date', reads: 'A medal of Honorary Membership given on the occasion of my election to that honour. 1877.' While Roberts does not appear to have written on Alma-Tadema directly, he was a voluminous author who, at the time of writing, had just completed a two-volume work on the London auctioneers Christie's (1897).
