A comprehensive study of this fascinating instrument whose history goes back to medieval times. Part One, largely compiled by Susann Palmer, offers a detailed description of the instrument and how it works. There is also an illustrated classification of the various types, the numerous names by which it is known and its place in folklore. Subsequent chapters deal, century by century from the twelfth with historical and iconographical evidence of the hurdy-gurdy and its usage and development in various countries. Part Two is written by Samuel Palmer, himself a maker and repairer of the instrument, and gives practical and basic instruction on playing and maintaining the instrument. This is followed by appendices giving details of museums throughout the world with hurdy-gurdies in their collections, a list of eighteenth and nineteenth century makers and suitable music for the instrument. The book is lavishly illustrated. Book in very good condition with little sign of use. Gift inscription to front free end paper together with some small residual ballpoint marks which might have been a price note. Dust jacket very good. A little edge wear and some fading to spine. Book.
