This volume is a report of the proceedings of an International Symposium on Bladder Cancer and a selection of Urological papers presented at the Antwerp Medical Days in Antwerp, Belgium, on the 19th and 20th September 1980. The meeting was sponsored by the Antwerp Medical Days Program Committee supported by the Royal Antwerp Circle of Medicine, the Urological Group of the European Organization for Research on the Treatment of Cancer, the Belgische Vereniging voor Urologie, the Societe Belge d'Urologie, the Province and City of Antwerp and the National Fund for Scientific Medical Research of Belgium. Contributors were briefed to avoid too much overlapping, in the hope of obtaining a coherent compilation of clinical data. We are grateful for their discipline which enables early publication. All the contributions in this volume, except ~he section on immunology which was selected by the editors for its related inter est, were presented at the International Symposium under the sections 'Understanding the Disease', 'Therapeutic Approaches', 'Chemotherapy', and 'Prospective Studies'. The meeting was sponsored by the Urological Group of the EORTC (European Organisation for Research in the Treatment of Cancer), the WHO Collaborating Centre for Bladder Cancer, the European Urological Association, the Italian Research Council (CNR) , Italian League against Tumours, Italian Government and Regional Sicilian Government. Contributions were accepted on the understanding that the editors could make certain changes leading towards a uniformity of style but accepting as a priority the importance of early publication, if necessary at the expense of stylistic perfection. Editorial notes have been inserted at infrequent intervals, sometimes to summarise discussions and at others in an attempt to clarify certain issues or to highlight conflicting opinions. Although the work has been divided amongst the editors and co editors it is only proper to acknowledge that the major role in collating and in correcting much of the material has fallen on Mrs MAske who has also typed the manuscript. We should also like to acknowledge the kindness of the Yorkshire Regional Cancer Organisation who allowed Mrs Aske to devote much of her time to this work, Miss S Barrowby who has also given considerable secretarial assistance and the Department of Medical Photography, st James's University Hospital, Leeds whose staff are responsible for many of the illustrations. This was the fifth course of the International School of Urology and Nephrology, the fourth in a series of meetings devoted to different aspects of Urological Oncology. Speakers and delegates came from nearly every part of the world and contributed to a detailed analysis of the current state of knowledge of tumors of the testicle and to the development of knowledge of cancer of the bladder, prostate and kidney. Previous volumes resulting from this series of meetings have been well received and the Editors hope that the reader may find the record of this meeting equally attractive. We are indebted to the Department of Medical Illustration, St. James's University Hospital, for their kindness in producing several of the illustrations in this book.
