(1583-1652), celebre gesuita francese, insegnò teologia positiva e si dedicò alla collazione di antichi manoscritti. Da queste attività sorsero gli studi relativi a storia e cronologia che gli procurarono prestigio e grande credibilità in ambito europeo (Filippo IV di Spagna gli offrì infatti la cattedra di Storia al collegio di Madrid). Denis Petau (1583-1652) was a French Jesuit theologian, and one of the best-known scholars of his age, producing works in the fields of chronology, history, philosophy, polemics, patristics, and the history of Christianity. This work is a summary of a larger work he published in 1628, entitled Tabulae chronolgicae. That work was developed alongside of his vast, but unfinished, De theologicis dogmatibus, the first systematic attempt ever made to treat the development of christiana doctrine from an historical point of view. First edition of a controversial work by Denis Pétau containing the results of his historical research on the functioning of Christian clerical authorities (primarily bishops) from the time of the Church Fathers to his own time, followed by a discussion of various questions of dogma. The text contains many citations from Latin and Greek Fathers. It is divided into two "books": liber primus "qui est de episcopis, & eorum jurisdictione, ac dignitate" (pp. 1-160) discusses the very delicate subject of the authority of bishops, a major issue in the disputes between Catholics and Protestants; and liber secundus "in quo certae fidei, vel rerum ecclesiasticarum quaestiones disputantur" (pp. 161-354) discusses various other questions of dogma related to widespread heresies. Pétau was a prodigious author and "one of the most distinguished theologians of the seventeenth century" (Catholic encyclopaedia), with works ranging over chronology, history, philosophy, patristics and the history of dogma. He is now best known for his vast, but unfinished six-volume work on dogma, the first systematic attempt to treat the development of Christian doctrine from an historical point of view. With the foot margin of C5 (pp. 41-42) cut away, with no loss of text, otherwise in fine condition. Gold-tooled red goatskin morocco (ca. 1700?), sewn on 5 cords, each board with a double frame of triple filets with a small decoration on each corner and a larger one outside each corner of the inner frame, spine with the title in the 2nd of 6 compartments and the others richly gold-tooled, gold-tooled raised bands and board edges, marbled paste-downs (straight-combed with teeth spaced 1 to 4 mm apart, in yellow, blue, black and white), gilt edges, headbands in blue and white. With Cramoisy's engraved coupling storks device on the title page (in a cartouche with his arms above - 3 stars above an anchor - and his initials and a star in a heart topped by a cross below), a woodcut headpiece and tailpiece, woodcut decorated initials (3 series) and headpieces built up from typographic ornaments.
