Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Written by a prominent mathematician, this text offers advanced undergraduate and graduate students a virtually self-contained treatment of the basics of Galois theory. The source of modern abstract algebra and one of abstract algebra's most concrete applications, Galois theory serves as an excellent introduction to group theory and provides a strong, historically relevant motivation for the introduction of the basics of abstract algebra. This two-part treatment begins with the elements of Galois theory, focusing on related concepts from field theory, including the structure of important types of extensions and the field of algebraic numbers. A consideration of relevant facts from group theory leads to a survey of Galois theory, with discussions of normal extensions, the order and correspondence of the Galois group, and Galois groups of a normal subfield and of two fields. The second part explores the solution of equations by radicals, returning to the general theory of groups for relevant facts, examining equations solvable by radicals and their construction, and concluding with the unsolvability by radicals of the general equation of degree n 5. A virtually self-contained treatment of the basics of Galois theory. This 2-part approach begins with the elements of Galois theory and concludes with the unsolvability by radicals of the general equation of degree n is greater than 5. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Riemannian geometry is a fundamental area of modern mathematics and is important to the study of relativity. Within the larger context of Riemannian mathematics, the active subdiscipline of geodesics (shortest paths) in Riemannian spaces is of particular significance. This compact and self-contained text by a noted theorist presents the essentials of modern differential geometry as well as basic tools for the study of Morse theory. The advanced treatment emphasizes analytical rather than topological aspects of Morse theory and requires a solid background in calculus. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students of mathematics, the text opens with a chapter on smooth manifolds, followed by a consideration of spaces of affine connection. Subsequent chapters explore Riemannian spaces and offer an extensive treatment of the variational properties of geodesics and auxiliary theorems and matters. AUTHOR: Soviet mathematician Mikhail Mikhailovich Postnikov (19272004) worked primarily in algebraic and differential topology. He was on the Mechanics and Mathematics faculty of Moscow State University. This book is a direct continuation of the author's previous book* and is akin to it in being a nearly faithful record of the Lectures delivered by the author in the second semester of the first, year at the Mathematics-Mechanics Faculty of Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov to mathematical students (a course in Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry). Naturally, in the selection of the material and the order of presentation the author was guided by the same considerations as in the first semester (see the Preface in [1]). The number of Lectures in the book is explained by the fact that although the curriculum assigns 32 Lectures to the course, in practice it is impossible to deliver more than 27 Lectures. The course in Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry is just a part of a single two-year course in geometry, and much in this book is accounted for, as regards the choice of the material and its accentuation, by orientation to the second year devoted to the differential geometry of manifolds. In particular, it has proved possible (although it is not envisaged by the curriculum) to transfer part of the propaedeutic material of the third semester (the elementary differential geometry of curves and surfaces in three-dimensional space) to the second-semester course and this has substantially facilitated (not only for the Lecturer but, what is of course more important, also for the students) the third semester course. At the same time, as experience has shown, this material appeals to the students and they learn it well on the whole already in the second semester. M. M.
