One can't live, or even be visiting northern New Mexico during Holy Week, and not be aware of the devoted making this annual pilgrimage. From Rio Arriba, to Taos to San Miguel, to Santa Fe and many other counties, one will see the steady stream of pilgrims trekking along the side of local roads and highways, heading for Chimayo. For many the journey is many many miles, and will take all week. The reverence and recognition of the properties of the sacred, holy and healing dirt at the Santuario de Chimayo actually predates the arrival of the Spanish, and the building of the Santuario, and was first recognized by the native Tewa and other tribes.
