Full leather. Etat : Near fine. First John Baskerville Edition. Octavo, [two volumes], [i], ii-lxix, 416pp; 390pp. Full brown calf, thin gilt trim to covers. Five raised bands, title in gilt over red and green morocco labels affixed to spine. Gilt embellishments to compartments on spine. Solid text blocks, small chips to corners…, faint creasing along hinges. Light foxing along endpapers, occasional spotting throughout text. Overall, a bright, near fine example. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front endpaper of both volumes. (Gaskell 4a) (Gaskell 5a). In addition to Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, John Baskerville is celebrated for his clear printings of Virgil (1757), Joseph Addison works (1761), The Bible (1763), and Vergil in English (1766). He is the namesake of the modern Baskerville typeface. A complete set of Paradise Lost together with Paradise Regained by John Milton. This is the first edition printed by type designer John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, published in 1758. (illustrateur).

Cambridge, Printed by John Baskerville, Print…er to the University; By whom they are sold, and by B. Dod, Bookseller, In Ave-Mary Lane, London. MDCCLX. [1760] Hardcover. Bound in full leather. Black leather with beautiful, perhaps original binding. Gold patterned border on the boards and large floral motif decoration in the centers. Raised cords, with gold decorations in all 6 panels of the spine. Marbled endpapers. Foreedges gilt. Book measures 6" x 9". Text is in a single column, without the decorative border (other editions of the Baskerville BOCP have double columns of text and/or a border around the text). Unpaginated. Price of the book printed at the bottom of the title page is "seven shillings and Six Pence, unbound" but the Seven Shillings part is a separate small piece of paper that is pasted over whatever original price was printed on the title page. 2 names signed on the first blank page. The first is "Frances Norris" and it is dated 22nd Sept 1760. The other inscription is "Given to Lorisa Fredgold by Mrs Norris in June 1820" [the name is hard to read & might be something else please ask for photos.] Very good condition. A beautiful copy in every regard.

Spine divided in 5 compartments, each richly gilt and with a blindtooled stamp in the middle. Covers with broad gilt borders and blindtooled cornerpieces. Inside gilt borders. Edges of covers also gilt, Edges of leaves gil…t. Faint discolouring at upper compartment. Unpaginated. (272) pp. Last leaf is L I2. Title-page laid down. Inner upper corner of title-page gone, but repaired, shaving the "C" in "Common". Brownspots to title-page. B7 with marginal repairs. Some rather faint scattered brownspots. Second edition (the same year as the first). Text printed in double columns and leaves without borders around the text.- Gaskell,13.
