Gilbert mentions him in his Bab Ballads. He was a passing character in Chesterton's "The Man Who Was Thursday" 1908. His pal E.C. Bentley also wrote of him "Martin Tupper sang for his supper, tho his supper wasn't nice, it was cheap at the price". A genial and humane man, Charterhouse and Oxford scholar, He wrote both prose and verse. His work "Proverbial Philosophy" of 1847 was not a success at first but sold a million copies on both sides of the Atlantic. It contained many quotes and squibs inc; "Well-timed silence hath more eloquence than speech". Buried in Albury in Surrey. A scarce fictional work on many things, both philosophical and flippant.
