Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. Since 1991, many books have been written about the Gulf War. Most have dealt with the politics of the situation and many have covered the now famous '100-Hour' land campaign. Despite it lasting ten times longer, few books have concentrated on the enabling air campaign, and none have dealt entire…ly satisfactorily with the Royal Air Force's part in it. This book will go some way to redress the situation. By no means a definitive history of the 1991 air war, it is a gathering of personal recollections from one of the many unit commanders involved. Lacking the benefits of hindsight, it is an honest attempt to 'tell it how it was' and the words used and views expressed are entirely the author's own and those of his subordinates. As clocks in London heralded the 17th January 1991, he and his two fellow Tornado GR1 detachment commanders found themselves at the head of their respective formations, flying in total darkness, at high speed and very low level on their way to attack enemy airfields. Apart from it being their first wave of the main air war, given their extensive training in the low-level strike/attack role in North West Europe, there should have been nothing particularly remarkable about this, except that: . they were about to drop a type of weapon that they had never dropped before . they were flying faster and lower than had ever been permitted in training . unless their nav kits were completely up the creek, they were flying over a desert, far outside the NATO area, and well and truly east of Suez Jerry died in 2020 from a debilitating neurological disease and this book was left unfinished. Several of his friends involved in the conflict have decided to complete it for him as a legacy to honour his outstanding leadership of 31 Squadron and particularly his wider command responsibilities during the Gulf War. AUTHOR: Jerry was the officer commanding 31 Squadron, a Tornado GR1 unit based at RAF Brueggen,West Germany and was the GR1/1A detachment commander based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War with aircrew, groundcrew and aircraft from seven Tornado squadrons. Les was his senior engineering officer. This book concentrates on the air campaign that enabled the '100-Hour' land campaign of the Gulf War and the Royal Air Force's part in it. It is a gathering of personal recollections from one of the many unit commanders involved. Lacking the benefits of hindsight, it is an honest attempt to tell it how it was. No Binding. Etat : Very Good. A unique set of 50 original b/w aerial views from 1922-29, @20x16cm, most with detailed captions and notes in the print, some with RAF ink stamps and captions to versos. Most VG to near fine, some chipped to corners, one with tape repair to verso, one 2-hole punched, one with extraction residue to v…erso, one heavily annotated. The earliest date to between the Cairo Conference in March 1921 which entrusted Iraq's security to the RAF, and enacting that plan via the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of October 1922. This cost saving measure transferring responsibility away from the Army, involved creating new landing grounds in defended areas, which negated the need for vulnerable supply lines. The RAF was asked to deal with multiple threats to the new Hashemite monarchy from Kurdistan (then in a state of rebellion), Turkish expansionism, the Shia, and the Sultanate of Nejd, and conduct punitive bombing strikes for non payment of tax. Its aerial surveys produced photos such as these to make maps to conduct its operations supported by armoured cars and Levies on the ground. As much of the threat in the early 1920s came from the north, many photos cover Kurdistan, with other areas including Diyala, Nasiriyah, Kirkuk, Basrah, Baghdad and Nineveh. Subjects include Landing Grounds (LG) and nearby settlements, villages, a bombing raid, police on the march, terrain, Bedu, and new hospitals. Captions give location, date, time, altitude, focal length and coordinates. Some credit the Squadron responsible, with many earlier ones naming 84 Squadron or Air HQ. No Binding. Etat : Very Good. Original b/w photo 26x21cm with printed caption label and Capital Press Photos ink stamp to verso. Very good. No. 70 Squadron had been based in the Middle East since 1 Feb 1920, relocating between Egypt, Iraq, Libya and Tunisia before arriving in Nicosia in 1955. In addition to providing transport,…evacuation and ambulance functions, it had been responsible for maintaining the Cairo-Baghdad airmail route created by the RAF in the 1920s. Its 40th Anniversary celebrations included a training flight over Cyprus, and cutting a Squadron crest shaped cake in the presence of local journalists. This striking image looks down on to one of its Handley Page Hastings C1s (TG523) as it flies over Kyrenia's ruggedly picturesque harbour.

Both items in good condition, lightly-aged. ONE: 2pp., 4to. Having returned from 'a rather long painting expedition to France' he finds that 'circumstances have arisen in regard to the administration of the Society' [ the Society of British Film Art Directors and Designers, of which Craig was a leading light], and in the light o…f these circumstances Irving feels compelled to resign. 'It is [.] unlikely that I shall design any more films. Life is short and there is so much to be done that even if anybody wished me to, I should hesitate to commit myself to the months not only of work but of preoccupation which a film production involves. Quite apart from this I feel that the principles of film design which, however wrongly, I have always advocated, are being abandoned, naturally, in the face of economic pressure and the general registration of film making. I am old fashioned enough to believe that the situation into which films have fallen is very largely due to the insistance [sic] of those who have misguidedly and not very successfully tried to make it into an industry rather than a medium of expression for groups of artists of enterprise and imagination.' Two more paragraphs follow before the letter ends. TWO: 1p., 4to. Following the last letter Irving has been offered honorary membership of the Society, and writes: 'I do not feel that I deserve such consideration, for you and several others have striven hard to maintain the prestige of Art Directors in the gruelling factory conditions of commercial studios through good and bad times. However, as you well know, to an artist, the only commendation or criticism which really touches him is that of his fellow craftsmen [.]'. He offers his assistance to the Society, before ending: 'I heard from Flower that your meeting in London was a success, and that you are going to get out drawings and plans for the proposed Elizabethan theatre. I am very glad to hear this, and I know you will find the Stratford people charming to deal with.'.
