Marchal est une compilation, en 12 livraisons, de deux ouvrages : le premier par Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826), qui fut gouverneur de l île de 1811 à 1816 (The history of Java, Londres 1817), s attachant à l histoire, la géographie et l administration de l île ; le second du médecin militaire John Crawfurd (History of the Indian Archipelago, Edingurgh 1820) sur l art, les langages, les religions, les institutions et le commerce. Les 10 lithographies en couleurs de costumes ont été imprimées par J.B.A.M. Jobard, pionnier de la lithographie en couleurs. Bon état. -------- First and only french edition.
