In seiner Studie vergleicht er die Kompetenzentwicklungen Studierender, die Modellierungsaufgaben für den Einsatz mit Schülerinnen und Schülern eigenständig erstellen, und Studierender, die in einem vergleichbaren Lehr-Lern-Labor die Modellierungsaufgaben nicht selbst konzipieren. Mithilfe der Item-Response-Theorie weist er nach, dass sich sowohl die Aufgaben- als auch die Diagnosekompetenz zum Lehren mathematischen Modellierens als eindimensionale Leistungsdisposition erfassen lässt. Es wird deutlich, dass die Konzeption von Modellierungsaufgaben und ihr Einsatz in der Praxis zu einer differenten Kompetenzentwicklung beider Gruppen führen. Ferner lassen sich unterschiedliche, die Kompetenzentwicklung beeinflussende Faktoren, wie etwa das Vorwissen oder Überzeugungen zum mathematischen Modellieren, identifizieren.
