Egremont is located in the North West corner of England. This small historic town with its origins in the 12th century is situated approximately, in road miles equal distance from Carlisle in the North, Penrith in the East and Barrow in the South. The town nestles in the vale of the river Ehen, with the backdrop of western fells sheltering it in Winter from the icy blasts of the North Easterly winds. From the publisher: "In June 1920, in Duluth, Minnesota, a mob of over 10,000 convened upon the police station, inflamed by the rumor that black circus workers had raped a white teenage girlcharges that would later be proven false. Three men were dragged from their cells and lynched in front of the cheering crowd. More than eighty years later, Warren Reada fourth-grade teacher, devoted partner, and father to three boysplugged his mother's maiden name into a computer search engine, then clicked on a link to a newspaper article that would forever alter his understanding of himself. Louis Dondino, his beloved great-grandfather, had incited the deadly riot on that dark summer night decades before. In his poignant memoir, Read explores the perspectives of both the victims and the perpetrators of this heinous crime. He investigates the impactthe denial and angerthat the long-held secrets had on his family. Through this examination of the generations affected by one horrific night, he discovers we must each take responsibility for "our deep-seated fears that lead us to emotional, social, or physical violence.". Housed in the publisher's matching blue cloth slipcase, in fine condition. From a limited edition of 175 numbered copies and 26 deluxe copies signed by President George Bush. This book is a pr…esentation copy, held back for the author and signed by President George H.W. Bush and former President Gerald R. Ford (pg. 57). A scarce piece. In November 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990, which raised several taxesincluding increasing the top individual income-tax rate from 28 percent to 31 percent, raising the alternative minimum tax, and tightening high-income itemized deductions and exemptionsas part of a deficit reduction compromise. The decision directly contradicted his 1988 campaign pledge, "Read my lips: no new taxes," frustrating many conservatives and damaging his credibility. This reversal became a central issue in the 1992 presidential campaign, where Democratic challenger Bill Clinton used it to question Bush's trustworthiness, and many analysts cite Bush's broken promise as a major factor in his defeat to Clinton. Original publisher's green cloth lettered in black; original unclipped dust jacket (light toning overall, with small spot of skinning to spine panel, else fine). FIRST EDITION, of the economist's planned epilogue to h…is work Socialism (1922). The central point of Planned Chaos is its devastating analysis and refutation of the disastrously "mixed economy," the omnipresent belief that capitalism and socialism are not the only alternative economic systems, that the "third way," variously called "interventionism" or the "hampered economy" is a viable alternative. Dr. von Mises' analysis and evaluation of issues 75 years old read like illuminating insights into today's headlines, particularly his critique of government enforced minimum wage rates (Do you read me, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders?) "The issue," he writes, "is always the same: the government or the market. There is no third solution." INSCRIBED BY VON MISES TO PHILANTHROPIST AND BUSINESSMAN HARRY B. EARHART (1870 1954), on front free endpaper. A highly collectible copy of a rare first edition book, it belongs in a world-class library of freedom. Book #vP1422. $8800. "Communist plotters, in the United States as elsewhere, are… preparing for the conquest of political power.
