Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. REGINALD HEBER FROM GREENLAND S ICY MOUNTAINS ILLUSTRATED BY FREDERIC B. SCHELL 1884 ORNATE. As far as I can tell, this book is actually the illustrated words to one of the Author s better-known hymns. According to Wikipedia: Reginald Heber was an English bishop, man o…f letters and hymn-writer. After 16 years as a country parson, he served as the Bishop of Calcutta, India until his early death at the age of 42. As a youth, he had also traveled extensively and perhaps the choice of words and the eventual illustrations for this book were intended to remind the reader of that. I am pleased to present: From Greenland s Icy Mountains, by Reginald Heber, with 20 illustrations by Frederic B. Schell. This small hard cover book (6 ½ x 8 inches, 43 pages) was published by Porter & Coates of Philadelphia, dated 1884. It is bound in gray cloth with elaborate embossed and gilt & black decorations on the covers (which also have beveled edges) and on the spine. see the photos of the List of Illustrations which apparently include all of the pages. Each illustration is blank on the reverse and includes an image of a scene appropriate to the words of the hymn. The page edges are gilt all-round. Condition: This book is in good condition. The hard covers are darkened and soiled from handling and show some bumping to the corners and spine tips. Inside, I found a gift notation in pencil on the rear endpaper but that is the only mark in the book. The endpapers and pages immediately adjacent to them have some light foxing but this does not penetrate into the book. The interior pages and plates are clean and presentable throughout. The hinges are both intact but the binding is cracked at the first page after the front endpaper. Nevertheless, the binding feels tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
