Joel Chandler Harris created the fictional narrator Uncle Remus, whose stories were intended to depict the struggles of plantation life in the American South, so that makes a certain amount of sense, but does not make them any less problematic. A number of Uncle Remus stories have inspired adaptations to film and television, including Walt Disney's 1946 'Song of the South.'
