Light rubbing along the joints and at the spine ends, a few small marks to the rear board. All edges gilt. A few light marks to the closed page edges. Hinges per…haps a touch loose. A lovely litle early Victorian pocket book, with charming gilt decorations and clasp.

From Preface: 'This work was originally published, above thirty years a…go, under the title of the Evangelical Rambler. It has long been out of print; and its republication. . . has been recommended, as calculated to assist in arresting the progress of some popular errors and dangerous institutions, and in aiding the advancement of truth and social happiness. . . The Work. . . has undergone a very careful revision; many portions of the original have been re-written, and others omitted to make room for new matter of more interest and importance to the present time.' §The author of the Evangelical Rambler (1824) was the Reverend Timothy East; the revisions to this later, retitled version (1858; the copy offered being an 1861 reprint) are attributed to David Beveridge. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettering, elaborate gilt and blind decoration. Spines very slightly darkened. Volume II largely unopened. Contrasting endpapers to each volume. Neat bookplate of the author & book collector Nigel Temple to front pastedown above label denoting that this copy was from the publisher's private library, & Temple's pencilled notes identifying this as a John Leighton signed binding. The binder's gilt initials JL appear at the foot of the spines & also form a very discreet part of the gilt design of the upper covers (at foot, within heart-shaped motif). Top edges rough & a bit dusty. Rear upper corners a little chafed, but a very good set, very well preserved for this fragile binding-style. Ajouter au panier11 x 7.5cm. Attractive contemporary binding of full plum morocco with elaborate decoration in gilt and with colour morocco onlays to the boards and spine. All edges gilt. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little rubbing and minor loss to the onlays, a touch of wear to the head of the joints and minor rubbing to the extre…mities. The contents with a touch of cracking to the hinges in places and with one gathering and one other leaf standing slightly proud of the textblock are otherwise in good order. An appealing mid nineteenth-century pocket prayer book in a charming contemporary binding.

First Edition. with VII + 301pp, contemporary calf, a bit rubbed and a little foxed, hinges cracked but firm, but in very good acceptable condition, hardcover, blank endpapers annotated, PRINTED BY MARY WILSON, WOLVERHAMPTON, CIRCA 1757. *Beveridge was perhaps be…st noted, other than for his writings on theology, by his opposition to the Act of Union between England and Scotland. The printer of this Book of Sermons was probably the widow of the printer George Wilson and according to Mander's in his 'Early Wolverhampton Books and Printers' she had a large output , particularly of 'chap Book Type' books. A fine example of early Wolverhapton printing with most pleasing typography. Power gives the fist date of printing in Wolverhampton as 1724. A SPLENDID EXAMPLE OF PROVINCIAL PRINTING.
