The son of a doctor, he worked for a brewery in Norwich and then in London and Belgium, but in the mid-1970s retired early to the rural life in the north of the county. He began reading English at Oxford, but was swept up by war. He served in the Army and was caught in the debacle of Crete in 1941. He escaped from two camps, and so was consigned to Colditz. Minor mark to front cover, otherwise in excellent condition. NO inscriptions.

Browning to the page edges but the pages are otherwise unmarked. The jacket has chipping at the top and bottom of the spine with a one inch closed tear at the bottom next to the front panel. The spine is also browned and there is browning and some scattered staining to the front and rear panels. First printing. Signed by Author(s).
