Held in the original scarce slipcase. First thus, the first edition of this imprint. Numbered 94 of 750 sets that were handset and printed in Fell type on mould-made paper at the University Press Oxford. Illustrated, with coloured frontispieces and several vignettes to all volumes by Albert Rutherston. Rutherston was a famous painter of landscapes and figures. He also designed posters and theatre sets. The Italian-born British poet Humbert Wolfe wrote the preface to these works. Robert Herrick wrote his poetry during the seventeenth century. A Cavalier, he wrote over 2,500 poems. Most of these are found in his large poetry collection, 'Hesperides'. 'Hesperides' fills volumes I-III of this set. Volume IV contains his 'Noble Numbers and Additional Poems'. 'Hesperides' earned Robert Herrick his reputation and is regarded as his magnum opus. It falls in the 'Carpe Diem Genre' of poetry and this poem revived the genre. In the original paper vellum boards and held in the original slipcase. Externally, generally smart. Boards remain bright with just a few light marks and spots to boards and spines. Slipcase is smart with just some minor shelfwear to the edges. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Minor offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Slipcase is in a NEAR FINE condition. Near Fine. book.
