Written by the Naval Commander, Charles Napier Robinson. After a career in the Royal Navy, Robinson turned his hand to writing, and would eventually start the Society for Nautical Research. With a continued passion for the navy, it is apt much of Robinson literary works centre on the navy and naval history. Robinson oversaw the publication of Brassey's Naval & Shipping Annual and numerous other notable important maritime works. With introductory chapters by John Leyland. With the previous owner ink inscription to the front endpaper of 'Geoffrey Callender'. This is perhaps the same Geoffrey Callender the noted naval historian, appointed the first director of the Maritime Museum. Illustrated with numerous reproductions of prints, engravings and woodcuts throughout. Collated complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In the original publisher's full cloth binding.
