"Dopo aver studiato a Brescia e a Bologna, Carlo Roncalli fu piu volte a Parigi, dove strinse relazione con J.J. Rousseau e altri letterati. Ritiratosi poi nella sua citta fu socio di vare accademie. Tra il 1789 e il 1795 pubblico a Venezia 4 volumi di epigrammi. Propri o tradotti, in cui confessava modestamente di imitare lo spirito degli antichi; in verita tali componimenti non mancano di toni personali, sono di una fluida eleganza assai piacevole, rivelano spesso un acuto senso di osservazione e un animo nobile" (Laterza 1966: vol.
