Here Roy Ingleton honours 50 of those who have been awarded the nation's highest decoration for valour in the line of duty. The book is divided into sections according to the conflicts in which the awards were earned, each beginning with a concise historical overview to set the context for these acts of heroism. From the Crimea (some of the earliest VCs ever awarded), through to the Second World War, the entries encompass many of the most famous episodes in British military history and are drawn from all three services. Meet heroes such as Seargent Major Wooden of the 17th Lancers and surgeon Sir James Mouat who were granted VCs for their part in the Charge of the Light Brigade (Battle of Balaclava, 1857); Captain Walter Norris Congreve who helped to save the guns at Colenso (1899); Lieutenant Philip Neame, scion of Kent's famous brewing family and the only man to win both an Olympic gold medal and a VC (Neuve Chapelle, 1914); Major James McCudden, the leading British fighter ace of WWI and probably Kent's most famous VC winner (France 1917/18); Lieutenant Commander George Bradford RN (Zeebrugge Raid, 1918); Seargent Thomas Durrant, No 1 Commando (St Nazaire, 1942) and Lance Corporal John Harman (Battle of Kohima, 1944).The nation holds a special place in its heart for winners of the Victoria Cross and this book is sure to inspire not only those who are lucky enough to call Kent home, but anyone interested in British military history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Ajouter au panierSoftcover / Paperback. Etat : Fine. First edition. Softcover. Very little had been written about the work of the police in the Second World War. The fire service, the wardens, the Home Guard - all have had books devoted to them. But the vital role played by the omnipresent police men and women, has been largely ignored. And yet policing tasks and responsibilities underwent an almost complete change virtually overnight. Draconian new laws were passed; policemen whose beats happened to include a Jewish ghetto found themselves interning some good friends, just because they came from Germany. New organisations were formed (wardens, Home Guard, AFS), many of which had responsibilities that tended to overlap those of the police. No longer did the country bobby have just a little poaching to worry about; he suddenly found a squadron of B17s based on his "patch", with its full complement of attendant US servicemen. This book examines the changed role of the wartime police force and the effect the War had on the morals and mores of the population. It explores how shortages and rationing affected traditional standards. It reviews how the absence of menfolk and the influx of foreign troops was reflected in changes in moral behaviour, increased prostitution, sexual offences and vice in general. Other matters considered are the variations in crime patterns, the effect of the war on police/public attitudes and subsequent policing philosophies. Using both primary sources (the memories of surviving members of the force) and secondary sources (official publications, contemporary books, magazines etc.) the author successfully conveys the flavour of the period whilst providing an empirical analysis of the philosophy of policing in those uniquely troubled years. Illus., References, Bibliog. and Index. 392pp. trade size softcover. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. with no creasing to covers.

Ajouter au panierSoftcover / Paperback. Etat : Fine. No Jacket. First edition. Softcover. A book which takes the reader on a sinister journey through centuries of local crime and conspiracy, meeting villains of all sorts along the way. Cut-throats and poisoners, murderous lovers, desperate wives and husbands, violent thieves, boy killers, infanticides - almost every type of murder is represented here. The author's fascinating book recalls many grisly events and sad or unsavoury characters whose conduct throws a revealing light on their lives and the society of their day. Among the many instances of violence, wickedness and deceit the author recalls are a 14yr. old boy who killed, a mother who did away with her son, a husband who killed his wife and 4 children, the poisoning of an old lady, the murder of 2 wives by drowning, and the ease of the last man to be hanged in public at Maidstone. These cases are compelling reading for anyone who is interested in the dark side of human nature. Illus., Index. 126pp. softcover. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F.
