Ajouter au panierA large, attractive printed certificate, somewhat in the style of an early Victorian public notice, with heavily leaded font. Printed in black on one side of a 32 x 41 cm piece of cream vellum paper. Discoloured and ruckled from having been rolled up, but in good overall condition, and highly suitable (once flattened out) for framing. At bottom left, signatures of six 'Commissioners, and Members of the Board', one above the other: 'Adolphus Fieldmarshal / W. H. Clinton / Thomas Bradford A Gnl / J Gardiner DAG / G Scovell Govr. M. Genl. / T W Taylor Col: Lt Governor'. These are Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850); Sir George Scovell (1774-1861), Governor; Maj.-Gen. Thomas William Taylor (1782-1854), Lt Governor; Sir Thomas Bradford (1777-1853); Sir William Henry Clinton (1769-1846); Lt-Gen. Sir John Gardiner (1777-1851). All but Taylor and Gardiner have entries in the Oxford DNB. These two have obituaries in the Gentleman's Magazine, in March 1854 and October 1851 respectively. The recipient, Morton Grove Mansel (1823-1859), Lieut. 10th Foot, features in Burke's peerage as a member of the family 'Mansel-Pleydell of Whatcombe'. Reads (with manuscript additions in square brackets): 'ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE. / At a Collegiate Board, held for the Half Yearly Public Examinations, on the [4th & 5th] of [Novr.] 18[40.] / GENTLEMAN CADET [Morton G. Mansel] being qualified, according to the prescribed Rules of the Royal Military College, to hold a Commission in Her Majesty's Service, and having accordingly, on passing Six Public Examinations, been recommended for the same, and having, over and above the required Qualifications, made such further Progress in his Studies as, by the Rules of the Establishment, entitles him to a Certificate recording the SPECIAL APPROBATION of the Commissioner; We, the Commissioners, and Members of the Board, are of opinion that Gentleman Cadet [Morton G. Mansel] is worthy of this honorable Distinction, and do grant him our Certificate accordingly.'.

Ajouter au panier1p., 4to. On bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'H. G. Watson Esqr. | 13 St. Andrew's Square | Edinburgh', with three postmarks, and docketted 'Lawers | Military College 9 June 1845. | Tradesmens Bills'. In good condition, on aged and worn paper, with a few closed tears. The signature is illegible, but does not appear to be that of the Governor, General Sir George Scovell. It begins: 'In order to prevent, as far as I am able, any of the Gentlemen Cadets under my command incurring Debts with Tradesmen of the place, I have caused a person to make enquiries upon the subject, from which it appears that no Tradesman of Yorktown, Blackwater, Frimley, or Farnborough, has any demand against Gentleman Cadet [D. R. Williamson] up to this date. | It is my intention to make a similar enquiry at the end of every Term, the result of which shall be communicated to you. | If, in the face of this information and in direct contravention of the Printed Regulations of the College, you think fit to pay any Tradesmen's Bills in this place on behalf of Gentleman Cadet [Williamson] you will at least, I trust, do me the justice to admit that you cannot reasonably complain of any want of exertion on my part to check the ruinous practice.' Postscript: 'Of course, the contents of this Letter have no reference to Debts which have been contracted with your permission and authority; but, both for your Son's [amended in manuscript to 'Ward'] sake, and the general discipline of the College, I earnestly request that you will keep these within the narrowest possible limits, and that all orders may invariably through the Captain of his Company.'.

Ajouter au panierThe present item is excessively scarce: there is no record of it on either OCLC WorldCat or JISC. The Staff College Drag Hunt at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, was established in 1869 as a private pack which drag-hunted twice a week in the area surrounding Camberley, and after more than a hundred and fifty years, the hunt still rides. 1p, 12mo. Text enclosed in rules with decorative corners. In fair condition, lightly worn and spotted, with traces of stub and mounting on blank reverse. Titled: 'The Staff College Drag Hunt Song. / By Major M. Churchill, 2/Northampton Regiment, / Master, S.C.D.H., 1885-86, / Music from Mr. F. Cotton's "Forty Minutes." ' Seven numbered four-line stanzas and the following chorus: 'Then let us drink drag-hunting boys, and pass the bottle round, / Drink to the horse, the fox of course, a bumper to the hound; / And let us toast our farmers as a right good jolly sort, / When you haven't time for hunting then, the Drag is rattling sport.' First stanza: 'The gallant steed by nature made companion for the hound, / Will give us great enjoyment as o'er the fields we bound; / There's nothing like fox-hunting, and some might say the stag, / But when you can't get either, then there's nothing like the Drag.' The fourth stanza notes that 'many a Staff aspirant has saluted mother earth'. There are also references to the Staff College, Tangley Park and Easthampstead Park. The final stanza gives a toast to 'our Secretary's health', as 'He's the proper sort of fellow to instruct the R. M. C.' See image.
