The book is the fulfillment of a dream and three years of hard work. Dr. Biesele and the Diboll Historical Society have collected oral interviews of over 100 people who know Diboll best: friends and neighbors, laborers, owners, managers, housewives, whites, black, brown, young and old. They all have a story to tell and a perspective of the town that is unique to their way of life. [The book contains] over 100 pages of reminiscences from the interviews. It also includes seventeen sketches by local artist Raymond Ryan and over 100 photographs of the town and its people. [About the author] Megan Biesele is an anthropologist/oral historian who lives in Woodville, Texas, a forty-five-minute drive from Diboll. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1975. Since that time, she has done research and writing in both Texas and Africa. She spent three years in Kalahari Desert in Botswana and Namibia, southern Africa, living with the Kung Bushmen and studying their folklore and religious beliefs. This work with a completely oral culture, using the tape recorder as a main tool, was part of a general interest Megan has in oral expression, including oral history and traditional stories. Her work in East Texas has covered both oral history and written local history. She is an adjunct professor at Rice University in Houston, where she has taught oral history, folklore, and anthropology. XX Raymond Ryan is a life-long resident of the Diboll area, where the Ryan family name is closely connected with the early history of southern Angelina County. Ryan studied art at Stephen F. Austin University and Angelina College and has been a full-time artist since 1974. Working primarily in acrylic or pencil, Ryan strives to portray the western and East Texas subject matter he loves and knows best. He is represented in many public, private and corporate collections.
