Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. Samuel Stanesby (lithographs) (illustrateur). Ex Library. Volume 2 of the 4 volume series. 1870 reprint with lithography by Stanesby. Magnificent red cloth hardcover boards with intricate stamped designs and scroll work in the High Victorian style; gilt lettering and gilt page edges; heavy stock paper. Binding complete with all lithographs with tissue guards present numbered from 27 to 52 for this series. Binding tight with moderate wear to the board edges, pages dusty with light age toning; title page torn; x-library markings to the spine, library plates on the inside end pages; library block stamp with tiny holes stamped on the bottom of each lithograph. Very uncommon. Joseph Nash (1809 - 1878) was an English watercolour painter and lithographer, specialising in historical buildings. His major work was the 4-volume Mansions of England in the Olden Time, originally published from 1839-49. For the work, Nash travelled across England drawing house interiors and exteriors. He concentrated on the architectural aspects of the buildings, which, using the example of Joseph Strutt, he brought to life with the inclusion of groups of people. The volumes were very popular, with the lithographs circulated widely by newspapers, architects and other artists. The book was so effective it was claimed in Parliament that it was causing an increasing number of people to visit historical buildings.

Ajouter au panierIn Victorian Book Design, Ruari McLean writes: ÒA series of illuminated books with a character of their own, and almost the only series not published by Day & Son, were those illuminated by Samuel Stanesby. He produced at least eleven between 1857 and 1865, published by Griffith & Farran, and mostly chromolithographed by Ashbee & Dangerfield. They were small books with every page chromolithographed, and highly decorated bindings,Ó (p. 134). Octavo. 27 pp. All pages are chromographically illustrated in colors and gold with elaborate borders and decorative titles. Also with a chromolithograph title-page and presentation page. Chromolithographed by Ashbee & Dangerfield Original red morocco stamped in black and titled in gilt. Gilt spine with raised bands. A slight rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners, but overall the binding is very clean and attractive. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some light foxing. Ink gift signatures to front flyleaf and presentation page (both from a brother to his sister, dated 1866). List of family birthdays in ink in multiple hands to first interleaf (dates from 1849-1920). A very good, bright copy of an uncommon book. First edition. McLean, Victorian Book Design, p. 134. Ajouter au panierCloth. Etat : Good Only. Samuel Stanesby (illustrateur). First edition. The stunning first and only edition of this scarce floral gift book, with each leaf illuminated with vivid chromolithograph border detail. Undated, dated from a copy held at The British Library. Scarce. The first and only edition of the work, particularly scarce in this green variant cloth.Recased, although binding is beginning to fail with the occasional leaf detached but present. This is a fragile binding and is usually seen recased. The leaves have been incorrectly bound in the work, meaning the page numbers do not run sequentially. However, as each leaf is its own poem, the work can still be read and enjoyed. Collated complete. Each leaf contains vibrant chromolithograph marginal motifs, thematically linked to the included flower. This finely crafted book is a charming collection of short poetic extracts, all centred on flowers, and includes passages from Wordsworth and Shakespeare, amongst others. The work is a particularly ornate example of Victorian gift books, created for their beauty. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Recased, with leaves incorrectly bound out of sequence. Bumping to extremities and the odd handling mark to the boards. Prior owners' ink inscriptions to front free endpaper and paste down. Internally, binding strained, with several leaves detached but present. The odd spot, heavier to tissue guards, with illuminated leaves remaining fairly clean. Good Only. book.
