Paperback, stapled binding. 25 × 18.5cm, 64pp. The story of Britain's firemen, with particular emphasis on the work they were doing during the Blitz with text by Sansom, Spender and Gordon (they served as firemen during the Blitz), and illustrated throughout with work by Fireman artists who had held exhibitions of their work in the earlier years of the war at the Central School of Art and Crafts. There are nineteen artists featured, including Leonard Rosoman, Reginald Mills, Francis Needham and Norman Hepple. The book also includes a copy of Norman Hepple's "Discussion Grup eader, Fireman Roberts", this is George Arthur Roberts born in Trinidad in 1891 who fought for the British Army at Loos and the Somme. In 1938 he was the first Black man to join the London Auxiliary Fire, becoming a Leading Fireman was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in 1944. Condition: Good condition. There is light wear to the covers and central pages 29?36 are neatly detached. The booklet remains in strong readable condition.

The NFS was created in August 1941 by the amalgamation of the wartime national Auxiliary Fire Service and the local authority fire brigades (about 1,600 of them). It existed until 1948, when it was again split by the Fire Services Act 1947, with fire services reverting to local authority control, although this time there were far fewer brigades, with only one per county and county borough. Contains 219 pp with splendid monochrome illustrations throughout by Paul Dessau, Stanley Froude, and Leonard Rosoman.
