Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fine. FIRST EDITION. A special copy, bound in contemporary gold-tooled vellum (soiled and lightly rumpled, later label, ties lacking). The majority of copies, either in institutions or privately held, are in simple, unadorned stiff vellum. Internally fine. Two preliminary leaves with a light dampstain, a few insignificant stains. Later endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with 2 engraved titles incorporating a portrait of the author, 42 full-page woodcut illustrations (3 double-page), and 44 full-page engraved illustrations (5 of them double-page). Text with ornamental initials and headpieces. The first edition of one of the last major architectural treatises of the Italian Renaissance, composed by the Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616). Originally conceived in 10 books, only books 1 to 3 of the first part and books 6 to 8 of the second part were published; the others remained unfinished at Scamozzi's death in 1616. "They cover the history and theory of architecture, fortification and town planning, palaces and villas, building materials, and methods of construction."(Millard Catalogue). All of the illustrations are the work of the author. "Scamozzi, along with Sebastiano Serlio, Palladio, and Vignola, was one of the most distinguished theorists of the Renaissance He is distinguished among 16th century Italian architectural theorists in having also produced a large body of surviving architectural works. These include the Procuratie Nuove in Venice and the design of the town of Sabbioneta In his old age, Scamozzi 'enjoyed an undisputed international reputation and provided a direct link with Palladio for Bernini's generation' (Wittkower 1983, 26) and also connected 'the Palladian tradition to the greater inventions of his pupil Longhena'(Lewis 1977, 45). Scamozzi had been the student and assistant of Andrea Palladio, many of whose works he completed after 1580, including the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. He was highly cultivated and well traveled, spending time in Rome and Naples between 1578 and 1580, and joined the Venetian delegation sent to congratulate Sixtus V on his election as pope in 1585. Scamozzi settled in Venice in 1581 after his extensive stay in Rome and Naples, where he excavated, measured and drew architectural ruins and studied mathematics." "According to Horst de la Croix (1963,35), Scamozzi is the last Renaissance treatise writer to integrate both civic and military architecture in one study For example, in book 2 of part i, Scamozzi's discussion of the urban building site includes the dimensions of great cities, the qualities of good ports, the layout of streets and principal buildings of a city, and the form and constituent elements of fortification. His instructions cover the entire range of urban considerations, including the width of streets (which should not be wider than the height of flanking buildings in order to maintain optimal temperatures), their pavement (which should not be of stone because it is too noisy), the design of the five proposed squares of the city, and the perimeter of the city (5 km long and surrounded by a military street). "Contrary to Vitruvius who defines architecture as concerned with buildings, solar clocks, and machines (cats. 155-161), Scamozzi divides it into four aspects: architecture as humanist discipline, building, decoration, and preservation. In book one he elaborates on his axiom that architecture is a science and thus teachable. He is concerned with architectural ideas as the property of the architect and advises that one's designs and models should be kept close by, and that the architect should dispose of his drawings as he sees fit. In addition to the Vitruvian requirements for the architect's education, Scamozzi maintains the importance of the architect's honor and the patron's dignity and is among the first to recognize and 'formulate the political ambivalence' of the architect's position (Kruft 1994)."(Pollak, Millard Catalogue, Vol. IV, no. 122) Collated against the Royal Academy copy. Collations of both parts: The pagination for Part I includes the printer's leaf of corrections (recto unpaginated, verso numbered 96) inserted before page 97. Collation: Pt I. a8, A-G6, H4 (H4 blank), a3, I-K6, L-M2, N-R6, S4, T-X2, Y8, a2, Z6, Aa-Ii6, Kk-Ll4 (-Ll4 blank), a-b6, c4. Pt II. *6 (*or 4 + ?2), A-B6, C4, D2, E-O6, P8, a2, Q-Z6; ?2, Aa-Gg6, Hh4, Ii4, *6, **4. Without the register leaf, possibly indicating early issue.

Ajouter au panierThe First French edition of Scamozzi with impressive engraved full-page architectural renderings and illustrations. With half-title, elaborately engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page printed in red and black, handsomely engraved dedication, engraved head and tail pieces throughout, and with a vast number of engraved full page architectural plans, renderings and other illustrations including 42 engravings to text (37 full-page, five half-page), 44 full-page woodcuts to text (two double-page), and with 18 (of 21) fine sculptural plates of the Edifices of Rome. Folio, bound in contemporary full mottled calf, the spine with gilt tooled and framed compartments between raised bands. [xii], 276 pp., lacking leaf ee4 (page 219/220). A handsome volume, internally the paper is fresh and clean, unpressed and well preserved, the contemporary calf unrestored and unsophisticated in original state, with some age wear evident to the board edges and corners, the hinges strong, some external cracking to a few joints, the spine mellowed and a bit worn with some loss of leather to both the head and tail, evidence of old worming at the endleaves and boards, affecting only the first few and last few leaves, just a single small dot by the titlepage and gone completely by the preface and not showing again till the final page of the index. A VERY HANDSOME EARLY PRINTING OF ONE OF THE GREAT ARCHITECTURAL WORKS AND A FUNDAMENTAL manual on buildingS AND CONSTRUCTION throughout Europe. Scamozzi was arguably the most important figure in European architecture between Andrea Palladio, whose projects he inherited when Palladio died in 1580, and Baldassarre Longhena, Scamozzi's own and only student. This is a fine French translation of his "Universal Architecture" with his rules of the orders; "the book which gave the final codification of the orders and of Palladian classicism in Vignola's mathematics based system with its own demonstrable laws."- Fowler. "Of ten books planned [on the Vitruvian model] only six were completed: Books 1-3 and 6-8. Of these, book six [frequently reprinted and translated separately] became the leading manual on building according to the Rule of the Orders throughout Europe, while book two provided the basis for subsequent "ideal city" concepts. Scamozzi's own executed work is illustrated in book three - town houses at Vicenza, Venice and Bergamo and a series of country estates [on the model of the classical villa] including the two related Palladio-based designs for the Villa Pesaro at Lonigo and the Villa Molina at Padua." As a further note to placing the books: the first book is dedicated to fundamental theoretical premises of and a summary of the history of architecuture; the second part concerns the construction of the city and includes certain studies of military architecture as well; the third part concerns civil architecture with particular regard to the classical house and with interesting notes about the construction of the diverse cities throughout Europe but with an approach to linking the forms created throughout history. In the Second Part, the sixth book is dedicated to the five orders, the seventh to architectural materials, the eighth to directing construction. The very handsome engraved illustrations throughout the work are beautifully reproduced here from the Italian originals.
