Zwischen 1801 und 1806…hielt Schelling zunächst an der Universität in Jena, später in Würzburg Vorlesungen über sein philosophisches System. Publiziert wurde das Vorlesungsmanuskript erst 1860 nach dem Tode Schellings in den »Sämmtlichen Werken« (Bd. 6). Das Würzburger System ist die einzige erhaltene umfassende Darstellung von Schellings Identitätsphilosophie. Schelling schildert darin ausführlich den Zusammenhang von Natur- und Idealphilosophie. Die Edition gibt den Text aus den »Sämmtlichen Werken« wieder und vergleicht ihn mit Nachschriften der Vorlesungen. Weitere Texte des Bandes sind die »Propädeutik« (1804), die Erwiderung Schellings auf eine Kritik Johannes von Müllers (veröffentlicht unter der Sigle "Ths.") und das Fragment »Über das Wesen deutscher Wissenschaft« (1807).
