Der Philosoph Joachim Ritter (1903-1974) datiert das Ereignis auf den 26. April des Jahres 1336. An diesem Tag bestieg Petrarca den Mont Ventoux, ohne besonderen Anlass, nur zum Vergnügen. Inwiefern damit eine neue ideengeschichtliche Epoche begann, erläutert Ritter in zwei bisher unveröffentlichten Vorlesungen, die er 1947/48 und 1962 in Münster hielt. Seine Beispiele reichen von der pythagoreischen Sternenmusik bis zu Franz Kafka, und seine These ist so einfach wie einleuchtend: Als die moderne Wissenschaft und Technik begann, die Natur als Objekt zu behandeln, bildete sich auch der ästhetische Sinn aus. So bleibt in der sinnlichen Empfindung und im autonomen Kunstwerk gegenwärtig, was die metaphysische Tradition als das Ganze und Göttliche bezeichnet hatte. Seither tritt neben die Wahrheit der Wissenschaft als ihre notwendige Ergänzung die ästhetische Wahrheit.
