Hardcover. Etat : New. On May 2, 1863, Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson led his Second Corps around the unsuspecting Army of the Potomac on one of the most daring flank marches in history. His surprise flank attacklaunched with the five simple words "You can go forward, then"collapsed a Union corps in one of the most stunning accomplishments of the war. Flushed with victory, Jackson decided to continue attacking into the night. He and members of his staff rode beyond the lines to scout the ground while his units reorganized. However, Southern soldiers mistook the riders for Union cavalry and opened fire, mortally wounding Jackson at the apogee of his military career. One of the rounds broke Jackson's left arm, which required amputation. A week later Old Jack was dead. Author Mathew W. Lively utilizes extensive primary source material and a firm understanding of the area to re-examine the gripping story of the final days of one of the Confederacy's greatest generals, and how Southerners came to view Jackson's death during and after the conflict. Dr. Lively begins his compelling narrative with a visit from Jackson's family prior to the battle of Chancellorsville, then follows his course through the conflict to its fatal outcome. On May 2, 1863, Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson led his Second Corps around the unsuspecting Army of the Potomac on one of the most daring flank marches in history. His surprise flank attacklaunched with the five simple words "You can g (illustrateur). book. …

Cover has wear and soiling. Dornbusch 746. Introduction by General John A. Lejeune. The 2nd Engineer Battalion is an engineering battalion in the United States Army which can trace its lineage back to 1861. 2d Battalion of Engineers expanded, reorganized, and redesignated 1 July-1 August 1916 as the 2d Regiment of Engineers. 2d Regiment of Engineers expanded 21 May-20 June 1917 to form the 2d, 4th, and 5th Regiments of Engineers (4th and 5th Regiments of Engineers-hereafter separate lineages). 2d Regiment of Engineers redesignated 29 August 1917 as the 2d Engineers. Assigned in September 1917 to the 2d Division (later redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Division (United States)). The Regiment participated in Mexican Expedition: Mexico 1916-1917 and World War I: Aisne; Aisne-Marne; St. Mihiel; Meuse-Argonne; Lorraine 1918; Ile de France 1918. General Lejeune wrote in the Introduction that "In the last battle of the war, it [the Regiment] threw two foot-bridges across the Meuse in the face of withering machine guns and heavy artillery fire, thereby enabling the advanced battalions of the Division to cross the river and seize the highest on the east bank. Battery Rathbone (1905-1948) was part of the harbor defenses of San Francisco. Battery Rathbone was a reinforced concrete, Endicott Period 6 inch coastal gun battery on Fort Barry, Marin County, California. The battery was named in G.O. 194, 27 Dec 1904 after Lt. Samuel B. Rathbone, U.S. Artillery, who died of wounds received in action at Queenstown Heights, Canada, in 1812. Battery construction started in 1904 and transferred to the Coast Artillery for use 8 Jun 1905. The east half of the Battery was renamed in G.O. 13, 22 Mar 1922, for Brig. Gen. James F. McIndoe, who died 6 Feb 1919. Battery deactivated in 1948. The following appeared on 28 October 1920 in The Columbus Ledger: A Columbus Boy's Distinguished Military Service. Hundreds of Columbus people recall him pleasantly-- plain Will Mitchell then, now Colonel William A. Mitchell of the United States army. It was only natural that the young man's thoughts should turn toward a military career, as his older brother, Colonel Americus Mitchell, was then an officer in the United States army. A local sponsor became greatly interested in him and was of substantial assistance in obtaining his appointment to the West Point Military Academy from the Fourth Georgia district. His army record subsequently was one of steady advancement. During the world War Colonel Mitchell organized the 20th Engineers (a forestry regiment) containing about 27,000 men, and shipped it to Europe, going over himself with the last detachment of the regiment. This was, perhaps, the largest regiment ever organized. Shortly after he reached France Colonel Mitchell was placed in command of the 2nd Engineers, this regiment constituting the Engineer regiment of the 2nd Division. He served with this regiment from Chateau Thierry to the armistice, and later on became corps engineer of the 8th corps. Those familiar with world-war history of course know of the famous Second Division, and his regiment constituted one of the most efficient parts of this great division. For his services he was awarded several medals by the French (one of them the second highest honor given by the French government) and the distinguished service medal by the United States. Colonel Mitchell then became an instructor at Fort Leavenworth. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.…

Ajouter au panierFourteen items from the papers of Sir Noel Galway Holmes, all but the last relating to his three decades of service in the British Army, with reports and recommendations by superior officers from 1920 to 1939. (Two more items, relating to Churchill and the Second World War, are offered separately.) Considering Holmes's central position in Churchill's war entourage, and his pivotal role in the logistical management of the Second World War, it is unaccountable that he should not have been accorded a proper biographical account, other than an obituary in the Daily Telegraph, 29 December 1982, and entry in Who Was Who. In Sir Ronald M. Weeks's 'Organisation and Equipment for War' (CUP, 1950) he is referred to in glowing terms: 'We were fortunate in having as D.Q.M.G. (Movements) [NGH's official title was 'Deputy-Quarter-Master-General for Movements'] an Irishman, Major-General Sir Noel Holmes, who held the job throughout the war. Blessed with a sense of humour, a strong constitution (he was an International Rugby footballer), the power of leadership and good judgment, he played no small part in the achievement of victory.' NHG's career was highly distinguished, as his decorations suggest. He joined the army in 1910, served in France during the First World War, and in India between the wars. His Second World War activities were, as the two items offered separately indicate, of vital importance. At the end of the war he spent a few months as commander of Aldershot before retiring from the army in 1946. Some items worn and aged, but complete and legible, in fair overall condition. The fourteen items are placed in what is clearly the envelope in which NGH received the details of his knighthood in the New Years' Honours List of 1946, with stamp of the Lord Chamberlain, St James's Palace, and printed address of the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood, St. James's Palace, addressed to 'Major General Noel G. Holmes / C.B., C.B.E., M.C., / The Garden House / Kelmead Road / Fleet / Hants'. ONE: [CV, 1910-1939] 'Army Form B. 199A.', giving NGH's personal details (birth, education, ethnicity (Officer: Irish; Officer's Father: Irish; Officer's Mother: Irish), training, and, most prominently, 'Particulars of Service, Records of Movements, Appointments, Promotions, Etc.' from 1 April 1910, when he 'Joined Special Reserve Connaught Rangers' in 'W. Ireland' to 13 February 1939, when he 'Assumed Offg. Command Tull. Brigade Area vice Bdr. Dening (on leave)' in Jullundur. 2pp, folio and 1p, 4to. The great length of the 'Particulars of Service' has led someone to annotate with exclamation mark, at the end of the folio part, '(Continued on attached)!' TWO: Copy of NGH's 'Annual Confidential Report' ('Army Form B. 194') dated from Cologne, 10 August 1920. Signature illegible. Positive report. 1p, folio. THREE: Copy of NGH's 'Annual Confidential Report' ('Army Form B. 194') by 'W. C. G. Henneker, Major Genl. Commdg. British Troops in Upper Silesia', dated 13 September 1921. 2pp, folio. 'I cannot praise Major Holmes sufficiently for the manner in which he carries out his work and I am extremely fortunate in getting him as my A.A. & Q.M.G. I have just recommended him for the Staff College. Apart from his efficiency in his work he is reliable and his advice is sound. I am much indebted to him.' FOUR: Copy of NGH's 'Annual Confidential Report' ('Army Form B. 194.') by Brigadier Hereward Wake, dated 12 September 1931. 2pp, folio. 'He is a first rate staff officer, with exceptional energy & ability and he has a detailed knowledge of his profession. Fit and active in mind and body. I consider he is much above the average of his rank well fitted for command, and that his early promotion (he has held a Brevet Majority since 1919) would be of advantage to the service. / He would make a useful instructor at The Staff College'. FIVE: 'Certified true Copy' of NGH's 'Annual Confidential Report' ('Army Form B. 194.'). Report by NGH's 'Immediate Commander' Lt C. …
