DE SEGUR simpatizzò per la Rivoluzione, poi per Napoleone (di cui scrisse egregiamente la storia fino alla campagna di Russia cui partecipò e che descrisse mirabilmente) e che seguì nei 100 giorni, ma nel 1814 nella Camera dei Pari votò per il re. Simpatizzò poi per la Rivoluzione del 1830, ma morì poco dopo. Gli storici moderni continuano ad apprezzare l'opera storica di de Ségur, benché segua il modello calssico nello stile e inserisca discorsi fittizi dei protagonisti.

Of particular interest are the sections of the memoirs relating to Ségur's service in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel under Rochambeau, and his appointment, 1784-89, as minister plenipotentiary to the court of Catherine II at St. Petersburg, where he concluded a commercial treaty (1787) that was extremely advantageous to France.
