Ajouter au panierEtat : Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 260 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The Powers of Genre describes a method for interpreting oral literature that depends upon and facilitates dialogue between insiders and outsiders to a tradition. Seitel illustrates this method with lively examples from Haya proverbs, folktales, and heroic verse. He then focuses on a single epic ballad to demonstrate, among other things, why stanzas need not rhyme, and how significance needs time in oral poetry and narrative. Making a controversial claim that an heroic age, similar to that of Ancient Greece, existed in Sub-Saharan Africa, this work will intrigue anyone who works in oral literature and narrative.

Edge tear on illustrated front cover (not into image). The Festival was co-sponsored by the National Park Service. The 1992 Festival of American Folklife, held June 25?29 and July 2?5 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., celebrated the Columbus Quincentenary by exploring cultural traditions in the Americas. Programs focused on Maroon cultures, New Mexico, American Indian music, and the 200th anniversary of the White House. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, established in 1967, honors contemporary living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Festival has featured participants from all fifty states and more than a hundred countries. Our Festival takes place every summer on the National Mall, with free performances, workshops, demonstrations, and other activities. It is an educational, research-based presentation that features master artisans and other tradition bearers. We invite visitors to sing and dance along, try crafts and games, learn traditional recipes, ask questions, and take part in this unique cultural exchange. In the summer of 1976, we celebrated the nation?s 200th anniversary with a twelve-week Festival on the National Mall. More than 5,000 participants and some 4.5 million visitors took part in the Bicentennial festivities. Beyond the Mall, this landmark event inspired folk arts programs and festivals across the country?many of which continue to serve Americans today. Key 1992 Festival Programs included Maroon Culture in the Americas: Highlighted traditions of Maroon communities from Suriname, French Guiana, Jamaica, Colombia, and the U.S. (Texas/Mexico); New Mexico: Featured the state's diverse cultural heritage. The Changing Soundscape in Indian Country: Explored the evolution of American Indian music, including waila, blues, and country; Workers at the White House: Celebrated the 200th anniversary of the White House by featuring stories and skills of its staff. The festival addressed themes of cultural identity and social change over the 500 years following 1492. The event featured workshops, performances, and demonstrations aimed at showcasing the lived experiences and cultural expressions of the featured communities.
