Questo volume ricostruisce la storia del sistema educativo italiano a partire dalle sue origini nel secolo XIX, prestando particolare attenzione allo scenario europeo e focalizzando l'attenzione sulla stagione di riforme concentratesi negli ultimi vent'anni nel mondo della scuola, della formazione e dell'università. Il libro è articolato in tre parti: la prima presenta il quadro di riferimento storico e teorico a partire dalle origini dello Stato italiano (1861), con particolare attenzione all'attuale scenario europeo; la seconda affronta le riforme che si sono concentrate in particolare nei decenni a cavallo tra i due secoli nel mondo della scuola, della formazione e dell'università; la terza parte propone delle sintetiche conclusioni generali con lo sguardo aperto sugli scenari futuri. Soprattutto la seconda parte descrive analiticamente il "ventennio di cambiamenti" (2000-2021), seguendo la successione dei vari Ministri dell'istruzione e dunque soffermandosi sulle riforme globali di Berlinguer (2000) e della Moratti (2003) fino al progetto di fare della scuola il motore dello sviluppo del Paese da parte del ministro Bianchi (2021). Un capitolo specifico si occupa dell'evoluzione dell'università e dell'istruzione terziaria in Italia. Chiudono il volume due appendici che riportano i dati quantitativi del sistema nell'ultimo ventennio e una sintetica descrizione in forma grafica della struttura attuale del sistema educativo italiano. Si ritiene che il volume possa fornire un'introduzione adeguata alla comprensione dei vari ordini e gradi del sistema educativo italiano di istruzione e di formazione e soprattutto possa offrire una serie di indicatori generali per valutare il percorso compiuto dall'Italia nel campo dell'educazione, dell'istruzione e della formazione professionale dalla sua unificazione nazionale ad oggi, per proiettarlo su un futuro umanamente degno, nella linea di uno sviluppo sostenibile per tutti e ciascuno. Pertanto, il lettore potrà trovare in queste pagine un solido e documentato punto di riferimento per ulteriori percorsi di approfondimento in ogni direzione. Destinatari prioritari continuano ad essere i docenti e gli studenti di scienze della formazione e dell'educazione.
