NOT Ex-library. [From Preface] In previous books I have compiled for Kern-Antelope Historical Society I have covered the history of early Antelope Valley. Since then I have been encouraged by many of my friends to write of my own experiences and the changes that have occurred in the Valley since my entrance on the scene. I was born in Palmdale in 1911. For the next sixty-plus years, most of my life has been spent in the Valley, the exception being when I took time out to attend college in Texas and Wisconsin. Also, I was away with "Uncle Sam's Navy" for a four year period during World War II. It must be confessed that until I married Dorene Burton I was much more interested in athletics than in history. Learning of her family's early life in Antelope Valley aroused interest in my own family's early life in local California and Antelope Valley. This, in turn, led to a keener interest in interest in local and state history; in fact, Dorene and I have become so deeply interested and involved that we developed a museum containing much Antelope Valley memorabilia. Many buildings of local historic interest have been brought to our "Gold Camp", located at the Burton's Tropico Gold Mine near Rosamond. Although this narrative is basically of my life in Antelope Valley, I hope you will enjoy sharing with me the everyday happening sand the great changes in our Valley during my lifetime.

An intimate record of a gold mining town, illustrated with archival photos, reconstructed from family…records, newspaper articles, and records of the Burton Bros. mining company. Topico Hill, outside of from Rosamond and some 50 miles north of Los Angeles, was long a resting spot for travelling Piute and Mojave Indians. Seams of red-colored clay lured Ezra Hamilton of the Los Angeles Pottery Company to the region. When Los Angeles' building boon fell to depression in the nineties, Hamiliton began panning for gold and struck it rich on what is known as Hamilton Hill. Already "homesteaded" was Charles Graves, an African-American from Kentucky, who extended hospitality and shared his lodgings; the Hamilton's will share the stake with Graves. Mining machinery idled in 1956; author Glen settle began conducting tours to mining tunnels then. A vignette awaiting a fuller portrait.
