Ajouter au panierHardcover. ix, 273 p.; front. (port.); 22 cm. Life of Francis Aidan, Cardinal Gasquet, O.S.B., Vatican Librarian, 1846-1929. 'Wednesday I saw a certain Baron von Hugel, such an enthusiast about work, Greek MSS. of the first centuries and early Biblical matters. He found it so hard to keep up the feu [ital.] without help or sympathy from Catholics. The only people who seemed to care were Protestant friends. He reminded me of you except that his hair stuck up on end. Friday a long talk with Dr. Boligo the Vatican Jesuit, who says Englishmen don't care about serious work. In his view they are all Ben Cruachans. Pity he doesn't know a few of ours thought I! His experience in the Museum is that there is work for a lifetime and the only people he has got to care are Protestants. But his learning is very dreadful--Coptic, Syriac, Hebrew, etc., all going at once and it makes one feel what an old owl one is.' (p. 138 f., Gasquet to Edmund Bishop, January 24, 1887) -- 'Wilfrid Ward, as editor of the Dublin Review, was gallantly defending Newman from the accusation of being the grandfather of Modernism. Under Pius X and his Secretary of State the pendulum of the Church seemed to have swung far in inhibiting Liberal thought. Thinkers like Ward and von Hugel were compelled to use their literary talents to defend themselves from Roman Inquisitors. It has been remarked that English theologians never get into trouble at Rome until their writings are translated into Italian. Possibly Ward and von Hugel became too involved in their English styles to suffer translation. In any case they survived the Modernist scare when angrier and clearer writers like Loisy and Tyrrell went under.' (p. 188) VG orig. red cloth in edgeworn black on red dj.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. xv, 167 p.; 19 cm. -- First printing of Newman's previously unpubl. 'The changed Mother' from Oct. 21, 1845 (not in Blehl) On pages 117-119: 'The Bodleian Library preserves the original and unprinted poem which was written by Newman within a fortnight of his conversion, dated from his old college and sent to Mark Pattison, among whose papers it was found. It gives the impression that he had received a very cold welcome on returning from Littlemore to the haunts he had once dominated. It also supplies an interpretation of the angel faces at the close of Lead, Kindly Light. To his intense and sensitive nature they reflected his beloved friends.' THE CHANGED MOTHER [stanzas 1-2, 10-11, 14-16] So Oxford, once thy dear old towers / Again to-day I see, / Each time looks like the last, tho' oft / I yet may visit thee. // But thou art changed, my Mother dear, / On me why look'st thou so? / I scarce did think thy ancient smile / Could clouded be with woe. / . . / Changed Mother! brethren yet I have, / Beloved like my own brother,-- / But those my angels sweet, will go,-- / Of them too thou art Mother. // Good-bye! changed Mother, oh good-bye! / We part not in unkindness: / I half began these silly words / In anger--'twas my blindness. / . . / I know there is one Mother yet / (Changed Mother! dost thou not know?) / Who never bade a sorrowing child / In hopeless sorrow go. // I know that I am not alone / Her prayers ascend each hour-- / I think, oh, thou my soul doth love! / She hath thy Heavenly dower. // Oh, Blessed Lord! may I and mine / Be with the One True Mother: / Then what thou wilt--to gift of thee / I cannot ask another! / Trin. Coll., / Oct. 21, 1845. Good dull, edgeworn orig. orange cloth. Ink marking on p. 114.
