This is the story of a Catholic priest who enlisted early in the Civil War and served with the 14th Louisiana, CSA. Material written by Southern soldiers are fairly scarce and desirable. Wiley wrote: "Father Sheeran's journal gives some interesting sidelights on Gen. Ewell, Gen. Early, and other high ranking Confederate leaders." It is an unusual document. I know of no diary of a Civil War chaplain on either side which approaches it in fullness of detail. This is a nice copy and fits in with any collection on Confederate units, Louisiana or the Civil War in general. See Nevins, Vol. 1, p. 157.
