First edition. 8vo. - (4),458 pp. - Original green cloth with pictorial decoration on front cover stamped in gilt (City Hall of Chicago burning). - Covers worn at extremities, spine somewhat faded, some foxing on endpapers, else very good. - First Edition. - Profusely illustrated with engravings (many full- page), and a folding engraved map, showing the bounderies of the fire. - Signed on inside front cover in ink "S.L. Clemens (Mark Twain)", and on front free endpaper "Eugene Field / Chicago, Sept. 14, 1895". - A note in pencil on front free endpaper states: "Autographs of Field and Twain are believed to be the work of notorious forger, Henry Dayton Sickles. Authority: Ralph Newman, Abraham Lincoln Book Store. - Newberry Library has a collection of Sickles' forgeries. Sickles worked in Chicago. 8/12/69.".
